Bio
Schlegel studied physics at RWTH Aachen University and worked in science and engineering before astronaut selection. ESA selected him in 1987, placing him in the European astronaut cohort that supported Spacelab and later ISS assembly.
He flew STS-55, the German D-2 Spacelab mission, and STS-122, the shuttle mission that delivered ESA's Columbus laboratory to the International . On STS-122 he performed work during Columbus installation.
