People, missions, vehicles, events, and terms link to one another without replacing each record's sourced history.
Census first, cards next
A canonical archive identity establishes that a subject belongs in the census; a reader-facing card or page is a separate presentation layer that expands from that foundation.
Professional, private, and unflown
Professional and private describe selection paths. Unflown means no documented launch into space, even when training or assignments exist.
Sources before certainty
Official and institutional sources come first. Missing evidence stays missing instead of being invented.
Names remain findable
Supported names and diacritics are preserved. Verified alternate spellings remain searchable without merging uncertain identities.
Real photographs, truthful labels
No generated substitutes. Exact, related, and unresolved images are labeled according to the evidence.
Exact insignia only
Mission patches must match the named mission and pass source review. A mission photograph is never presented as its insignia.
Reader participation
How passport awards work
The archive passport is optional. It starts in your browser and records broad collection, journey, and award IDs rather than a history of pages you read. Visit awards count distinct UTC days; missed days do not reset progress. Calendar awards use sourced reading lists for observances such as Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and the Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia anniversaries.
To earn a calendar patch, check in during its UTC window, open every linked archive record, and choose “Finish” after reading. Completion is reported by the visitor; the site does not measure reading time or claim to prove an article was read. A finished patch saves its award ID and UTC earned date. If account sync is available, you choose when to save your browser passport to that account.
Firsts trails connect specific milestones to the person, mission, and historical context behind them. “First” always names its scope, such as first human in space or first woman to command a shuttle. These trails can be finished at any time; memorial reading lists appear only on their anniversary dates. Remembrance patches are invitations to learn about the crews and safety history, not measures of grief.
Passport award patches are original illustrations made for this archive. They are separate from the sourced mission insignia shown on mission records and are not official NASA or agency patches.
When daily archive email is available, it requires a separate opt-in from a linked account with a verified address. Messages pair an editor-selected archive story with a source and a passport link. Receiving or opening an email does not count as a visit or complete a reading award, and every message includes an unsubscribe link.
Special awards are discretionary account recognition from the archive owner. The owner’s Atlas Keeper patch belongs only to that account; other special patches are granted individually. Recipients can hide or decline a patch without erasing their passport. A declined patch cannot be granted again until its recipient clears that choice. Awards are not assigned from guesses about a person’s identity or browsing activity. Account names and username filters stay in the private owner workspace; there is no public directory or leaderboard. Any future public badge display would require the recipient’s opt-in.
The total-space census currently contains 190,564 canonical identities across 29 record types. That count describes the machine-readable foundation, not 190,564 finished reader-facing cards.
Canonical identity
A stable, typed record with provenance, relationships, completeness state, and conflict-safe identifiers.
Reader-facing card or page
The preferred presentation for a person, mission, object, place, organization, event, or other subject that readers can meaningfully explore.
Explicit disposition
Highly granular records may be grouped under a parent or represented through a collection, but they are never silently omitted.
Every canonical identity has an audited target disposition and an exact enrichment and photo state. Twenty-nine bounded cohorts have now completed 84,544 deep reviews; both the first-deep standalone queue and the deeper quality-equivalence queue are zero. Cohorts 025–027 close the space-object pass across 31,982 standalone records. Terminal cohort 028 retains its frozen 21,451-record boundary across nineteen other archive classes, and cohort 029 reviews 2,023 later source records. Cohort 028 preserves 42,902 narrative paragraphs, 128,706 fact fields, 117,853 exact relationships, and 36,761 retained source links without inventing absent facts or links. Research ledgers remain internal. Public pages lead with the subject’s history, useful facts, relationships, sources, and imagery instead of review-state terminology or redundant source claims. Granular fragments remain inside public parent collections unless significance supports promotion: all 126 rare-status physical-stage candidates received individual review, 38 consequential collision, orbital-explosion, or failed-recovery histories were promoted to standalone cards, and the other 66,756 physical stages remain searchable parent-linked rows. A missing photograph does not block a card, and unresolved imagery retains an honest compact no-image state.
Photos must pass identity, date, visible-phase, source, rights, size, credit, visual, checksum, and NAS checks.
Exact
Shows the named event and phase.
Related
Shows the mission, but not the exact event.
Evidence hold
No defensible real photo is available yet.
Launch-photo review completed August 14, 2026
All 635 records are reconciled: 262 exact photos, 373 evidence holds, and zero active research items.
Current archive-wide photo inventory
The current census separates 3,589 exact reviewed-image identities, 15,933 contextual mission or related-image identities, 32,709 representative vehicle or family-image identities, and 26,586 reviewed no-publishable-image dispositions. Another 14,476 identities are not display-photo eligible, 2,938 retain terminal evidence or review holds, and 1 standalone record still requires qualified-source photo review. The remaining 94,332 physical or family records retain their audited parent or representative treatment until significance or exact imagery supports promotion. Reuse assignments retain the original approved asset, source, rights review, checksum, NAS master, and responsive derivatives. Cards visibly label contextual and representative images, while detail pages explain what the photograph depicts and what it does not claim to depict. Exact imagery always takes precedence when it becomes available.
NAS preservation and public delivery are separate checks. A staged image is not described as available from the public media origin until its file, database record, checksum, derivative URLs, and delivery canaries are verified. Existing static or source-hosted images and honest no-image states remain available during that rollout.

The current census reconciles 190,564 canonical identities across 29 record types, with 84,544 completed deep reviews and no standalone card waiting for a first or deeper editorial pass.
Completed evidence-triggered photo rechecks for 41,252 records. Approved images keep exact or visibly disclosed contextual relationships; searches without a qualified image retain an explicit hold.
The reader experience now separates Spaceflight Figures from organizations, gives launches decade-first entry points, groups events by era, and makes Space Objects a primary navigation destination without merging distinct identities.
NAS staging preserves reviewed originals and derivatives but does not establish public availability. Newly staged media remains outside the live public index until the separate origin activation and delivery checks pass.
Evidence-triggered photo rechecks proceed in complete batches
Closed 1,200 photo rechecks through discovery, visual review, source and rights verification, derivatives, NAS staging, card registration, and final audit.

Promoted five exact reviewed photographs for Fallen Astronaut, the Space Mirror Memorial, the NASA Art Program, From the Earth to the Moon, and the Partial Test Ban Treaty.
Generated and checksum-verified 23 responsive derivatives while preserving the five reviewed originals and their source, rights, credit, and processing disclosures.
Rejected eight misleading, non-photographic, or wrong-edition candidates and preserved 22 provider failures as explicit holds rather than claiming that no image exists.
The second pass promoted NASA frame ISS075-E-3182 for Expedition 75 with five responsive derivatives, rejected eight false matches or diagrams, closed 69 no-match searches, and retained 22 provider holds.
Completed ten additional 100-record passes, promoting exact or defensible contextual photographs for Progress-M 34, the AMS-02 installation, and the STS-119 S6 installation while rejecting 26 downloaded false matches and preserving provider failures as explicit holds.
Improved chronology searches by pairing generic event labels with their mission identifiers, sharply reducing title collisions without relaxing identity, photographic-medium, rights, or visual-review requirements.
Removed all 1,200 completed records from the active evidence-recheck queue, leaving 40,054, and connected nine total promoted assets from the recheck program to their reader-facing cards.
Archive-wide editorial quality pass closes
Completed every remaining deeper editorial review across all reader-facing archive classes, closing the quality-equivalence queue at zero without fabricating missing facts, relationships, sources, or imagery.

Reconciled the archive-wide census to 82,521 completed deep reviews, zero first-deep records, and zero summary-enriched records still requiring deeper editorial review.
Re-reviewed all 1,096 candidate-page records by title root and semantic role, assigning 1,038 contextual mission images and 58 representative family images through 317 existing approved assets.
The UI now distinguishes exact, contextual mission, representative family, and no-image states; non-exact images carry a visible disclosure and the original asset identity, source, rights review, and checksum remain unchanged.
The photo census now records 17,754 reviewed no-publishable-image dispositions and 56,460 active records, which next require title and family clustering before new-source discovery is assumed.
Clustered the full 56,460-record active photo queue into 2,102 repeated launch-vehicle and numbered-hardware families covering 41,067 cards, reducing the practical research boundary to 17,495 family and singleton subjects.
First-deep enrichment reaches every standalone archive card

Added a fail-closed, idempotent citation writer and permanent audit for the exact mission inventory, one-pilot crews, archive events, assignment relationships, source registry, and citation totals.
Protected the reviewed X-15 missions, details, assignments, and source records from historical suborbital regeneration and added an isolated full-generator regression test.
Mapped 110 facts for all three SpaceShipOne human spaceflights and the seven Enterprise and Unity powered-development flights to reviewed FAA, Smithsonian, NASA, NTSB, and Virgin Galactic records.
Retired generic duplicate links from the ten commercial suborbital dossiers and protected their missions, details, assignments, events, and source records from regeneration.
Mapped 525 facts across all 14 Project Vanguard, 10 Mariner, 10 TIROS, nine Ranger, and seven Surveyor mission records to reviewed NASA and NTRS sources.
Added exact inventory hashes, a fail-closed citation writer, and an isolated five-generator regression test, extending citation coverage to 1,882 facts across 162 missions without generated images or runtime work.
Exact Voskhod mission evidence
Replaced generic Voskhod dates and citations with exact NASA-backed mission facts.
View 1 details
Mapped all 24 Voskhod dossier facts across two crewed missions to NASA's 1964 and 1965 mission chronologies plus one precision-duration table, separated inherited launch and landing ranges into exact dates, removed an unrelated Earth-science catalog citation, canonicalized commander-first crew order, protected the reviewed records and spacecraft from broad Soviet/Chinese regeneration, and extended the permanent fail-closed citation gate to 1,104 facts across 89 missions.
Media rollout safeguards and monitored Preview
Added media monitoring, outage checks, and static rollback proof while Production stayed on bundled images.
View 20 details
Added rotating astronaut, mission, and vehicle canaries that retain per-request timing, media type, checksum, and cache evidence while separating expected invalid-request probes from real availability errors.
Scheduled small daily public-edge cohorts through the Preview review window with fourteen-day JSON evidence and no image work routed through Vercel Functions.
Added a private-origin failure test that requires a sanitized, non-cacheable response without exposing protected origin values.
Strengthened the complete static rollback build so it clears the public media origin, requires bundled image fallbacks, and rejects media-edge or image-optimizer URLs in generated routes.
Added an isolated local browser drill for three representative records; it redirects only the test browser's media hostname to an unreachable local address and never interrupts the live NAS or Cloudflare path.
Verified repeatable static exports and an exact disposable-database round trip, then repaired structured-field restoration and legacy public slugs uncovered by that proof.
Repaired mission-program tab titles and canonical links found by the expanded desktop and phone Preview smoke test.
Completed the refreshed protected Preview pass across all twenty-four desktop and phone route checks plus the Apollo 11 directory interaction, with no horizontal-overflow failures.
Hardened NAS presentation-content imports so obsolete generated topic buckets cannot silently survive a directory overlay, and prepared an exact-replacement reconciliation with database-aware rollback gates.
Added payload-free static snapshot identity reports and restricted public compatibility documents to their intended kind, slug, and payload fields while retaining recursive private-data rejection.
Minimized the private API container to compiled runtime files, migrations, and production dependencies, then required source-revision, pinned-base, platform, user, and runtime-inventory attestation before a NAS package can be assembled.
Added a fail-closed local astronaut-directory v1 retirement-readiness audit with an accepted v2 payload baseline and explicit retain, redirect, and removal gates; the live v1 response remains unchanged pending traffic, healthy-Production, and thirty-day compatibility evidence.
Mapped all 306 Project Mercury dossier facts across 26 missions to exact official NASA sources, replaced a stale planet-Mercury redirect and mis-scoped uncrewed references with six mission-specific crewed-flight pages, extended permanent citation auditing to 888 facts across 72 missions, and refreshed the derived archive reference index from current canonical source links.
Mapped all 55 Skylab dossier facts across four missions to NASA's postflight chronology, two exact launch records, and explicit mission-numbering history; retired a preflight safety review that had been mislabeled as a program summary from all 28 Skylab consumers and the legacy generator, and extended the permanent fail-closed citation gate to 943 facts across 76 missions.
Mapped all 65 Apollo-Soyuz dossier facts across five missions to six reviewed NASA and NTRS sources, normalized the two Cosmos test flights as reentries, retired four unsupported Soviet launcher records and stale recovery references, limited the Cosmos narratives to reviewed environmental-control testing and APAS-75 carriage, replaced the destructive legacy generator with a checked non-destructive repair wrapper, protected Apollo-Soyuz mission details from generic Soyuz regeneration, and extended the permanent fail-closed citation gate to 1,008 facts across 81 missions.

Replaced the three full astronaut datasets in the profile browser bundle with a deterministic 1,504-record identity table and server-completed photo fallbacks, reducing astronaut-profile first-load JavaScript from 5,212,291 to 1,418,315 uncompressed bytes and from 1,001,514 to 348,591 gzip bytes without adding a runtime endpoint.
Projected program crew records to card-visible fields before serialization, reducing the International Space Station crew page from 4,340,995 to 644,059 HTML bytes and its RSC navigation response from 3,759,032 to 324,613 bytes while preserving the complete crew directory.
Repaired the STS-45 dossier's mission-source identity so the complete 135-flight Shuttle audit once again enforces a mission-specific NASA reference for every record.
Kept Production unchanged and retained the temporary astronaut-directory compatibility response until the monitoring, explicit approval, healthy-production, and traffic gates are complete.
Reliable navigation, efficient delivery, and NAS archive readiness
Fixed navigation, reduced server work, strengthened deployment checks, and opened NAS media Preview.
View 10 details
Updated the NAS roster importer so repeated snapshots replace only importer-owned assignments, then verified the full astronaut, media, mission, and archive import sequence against the preserved production data.
Restored Missions, Crew or Science, Vehicles or Spacecraft, Timeline, and Photos navigation across all 338 mission-program archives without returning to the former 160,000-page deployment.
Added post-build route-manifest coverage so program sections must retain their static-on-demand fallback and a zero-route hard-404 deployment can no longer pass the Vercel build audit.
Stopped automatic link prefetch from opening cold archive records in the background, limited crawler access to prebuilt routes, and added a bounded twelve-page deployment check that cannot become a production-wide crawl.
Prebuilt twenty high-interest Apollo, Artemis, International Space Station, and Space Shuttle program sections and extended long-tail response caching to one year while retaining every uncommon record for deliberate human navigation.
Hardened malformed vehicle addresses so invalid record identifiers resolve to the archive's not-found response instead of a server error.
Activated the fail-closed public media Worker and custom domain with a fixed checksum-versioned path grammar, workers.dev disabled, and no Vercel image Function or home-network port exposure.
Corrected edge redirect handling, retained privacy-safe upstream diagnostics, and normalized copied Cloudflare Access Client IDs without logging or exposing protected values.
Passed warmed twenty-five-item smoke canaries for astronaut portraits, mission images, and vehicle images, including derivative byte checksums, original HEAD validation, five original checksum spot-checks per group, immutable cache headers, ETags, warm cache hits, and invalid-request rejection.
Configured the public media origin for Vercel Preview only; Production remains unchanged until the monitored Preview, outage, browser-fallback, and rollback gates pass.
Verified portrait recovery and source closure
Expanded reviewed portraits and closed missing and remote-only source queues without generated substitutes.
View 14 details
Approved one hundred seventeen additional identity- and rights-reviewed real portraits across Commons, NASA, CSA, ESA, Copernicus, DVIDS, and other official or institutional sources, with 421 responsive derivatives.
Preserved thirty-eight full source files totaling 28,252,947 bytes beside their reviewed subject crops on the NAS, including exact caption-position crops from historical group photographs.
Searched the complete live missing-portrait roster against DVIDS public image records with exact-name and career-context safeguards, zero retry failures, explicit public-domain checks, and no image-byte downloads during discovery; three candidates passed final identity and crop review.
Rejected place-name matches, unrelated namesakes, ambiguous group scenes, synthetic imagery, unofficial portrait hosts, and institutional photographs whose reuse rights could not be established.
Added deterministic per-person source-closure evidence spanning 114 hashed reports across Wikidata, Commons, NASA, DVIDS, Russian and Soviet sources, and international institutions: the 457-person cohort now records three finalized portraits, three quality-blocked sources, twenty-five rights-blocked sources, 426 exhausted searches, and no uncovered or still-actionable rows.
Recovered thirty-seven of the thirty-eight remote portraits whose sole prior blocker was oversized source selection by requesting exact 960-pixel Commons thumbnails, reapplying modern source and identity gates, and visually reviewing every staged portrait; the one roster URL that had changed files remains held.
Re-queried eighty-one prior identity- or identity-and-size-blocked portraits through two guarded passes, approved seventeen exact current matches with 65 responsive derivatives, and retained ambiguous identities, group scenes, and undersized files as explicit holds.
Reduced the remote-only portrait queue from 182 to 128, including the flown priority from 129 to 85, without accepting generated substitutes, ambiguous identities, or changed source files.
Reconciled all 128 remaining remote portraits to exactly one terminal disposition: thirty operator-quality holds, two legacy-quality holds, two shared-file reviews, sixty-six identity reviews, eleven rights blocks, ten credit blocks, and seven unavailable or drifted sources, with zero uncovered or conflicting rows.
Checksum-verified all 2,220 approved NAS-staged media masters and 10,368 registered derivatives with zero failures or size warnings; the browser delivery inventory exposes its 2,200 eligible assets and 10,319 eligible derivatives through direct browser-to-edge-to-NAS delivery without Vercel Function image work.
Replaced broad server-side media-registry imports with compact generated source manifests that preserve all approved and fallback-only assets, reduced the largest shared Vercel chunk from 6.06 MB to 3.87 MB, and connected Bùi Thanh Liêm's canonical profile to his already approved NAS portrait.
Moved thirty-eight conflicting unregistered NAS files into recoverable quarantine before replacement; no source or delivery files were destructively deleted.
Moved another 125 checksum-matched files belonging to thirty previously rejected portrait candidates out of canonical NAS paths and into a restore-capable quarantine ledger; approved registries and public delivery were unchanged.
Corrected an ORFEUS flight-identity mismatch with NASA's exact STS-51 photograph, preserved the prior STS-80 master and five derivatives under ORFEUS-SPAS II, and completed the checksum-guarded NAS replacement with no deletions or conflicts.
Astronaut Atlas at the main address
Moved AstronautAtlas to the main address, simplified routes, and reduced the static deployment.
View 17 details
Made the Astronaut Atlas landing page the default destination for the main site address.
Moved astronaut, mission, vehicle, event, topic, role, and reference pages onto concise canonical archive routes while retaining compatibility for older links.
Reduced generated deployment output from roughly 160,000 pages to a focused set of 1,242 prebuilt responses, including one temporary astronaut-directory compatibility endpoint, with remaining records still available through archive navigation and search.
Removed verified unused media and excluded preservation-only responsive derivatives from Vercel packaging, keeping the measured Vercel-effective public payload at 268,468,156 bytes while retaining checksum-verified archival copies.
Separated vehicle directory reads from detail-only astronaut and mission archives, reducing the traced vehicle-program function dependency set from 29.4 MB to 4.9 MB while preserving NAS/API fallback behavior.
Added compact, reproducible mission identity and directory indexes and split shared archive readers by responsibility, cutting major list-route traces by 69–87% and reducing generated Next.js output by about 52 MB without disconnecting NAS/API reads.
Dictionary-encoded the deferred astronaut directory while preserving its filters, search fields, identities, and media fallbacks, keeping the active response at 428,345 bytes versus the prior 546,287-byte format and retaining that prior format as a temporary rollout compatibility endpoint.
Stopped presenting synthetic reference plates as photography: 685 mission records and 1,177 vehicle records now use a clear no-image state where verified imagery is unavailable, future mission-media batches only accept verified official photos, and about 92 MB of plate files are excluded from Vercel packaging while remaining intact in Git and on the NAS.
Added route-specific canonical and social metadata, structured search data, bounded sitemap discovery, and stronger static-release provenance, reproducibility, media-integrity, and rollback checks.
Verified the apex and www production addresses, canonical redirects, HTTPS certificates, security headers, analytics delivery, robots instructions, and representative archive metadata after launch.
Began the verified portrait cleanup with twenty reviewed real portraits from IIAS, NASA, JPL, U.S. military archives, and explicitly licensed Commons sources, including responsive derivatives, attribution and rights records, checksum metadata, and NAS-verified archival copies.
Localized twenty-five additional flown-person portraits from exact-name public-domain NASA records, optimized every master above the 5 MiB target, and extended checksum staging and NAS audits across the managed derivative collection.
Approved nineteen numbered Commons NAS-only portrait batches with 347 identity- and rights-reviewed portraits, 1,478 responsive derivatives, and separate source-page and direct-file records while retaining publisher fallbacks for rollout; thirty visibly weak, undersized, composite, caption-obscured, or poorly framed candidates remain held, and two drifted sources were rejected by the staging guard.
Exhausted the 523-person missing-portrait Wikidata and Commons queue with complete dispositions and zero request failures, approving six additional portraits and 25 derivatives after visual review while quarantining one unsuitable group scene; a separate official NASA catalog pass covered all 517 remaining gaps and produced no safe download candidates.
Added explicit source-research holds for every remaining missing portrait instead of accepting unofficial, generated, rights-unclear, or incorrect namesake imagery.
Implemented an opt-in, checksum-versioned media path through Cloudflare’s public cache to the guarded NAS origin, with static browser fallbacks and no Vercel Function execution for image delivery; the current registry records 2,071 NAS-staged assets and 9,789 responsive derivatives.
Replaced the Boeing Orbital Flight Test synthetic reference plate and four vehicle no-image states with five identity-reviewed official NASA photographs, preserving exact credits, responsive checksums, and NAS-only delivery while holding six unsuitable candidates.
