Bio
Olivas earned engineering degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Houston, and Rice University. Before becoming an astronaut, he worked on mechanical and materials engineering problems tied to aerospace hardware and reliability.
Selected by NASA in 1998, Olivas flew STS-117 and STS-128. He performed on both missions, working on truss assembly, ammonia tank replacement, and external station hardware.
Olivas logged five spacewalks across his two shuttle flights. His record treats him as an ISS assembly EVA specialist, not just a two-flight shuttle passenger.
