Bio
Creighton entered NASA from the Navy test-pilot community. His operational aviation background led to shuttle pilot duties and then command assignments on missions involving communications satellites, Department of Defense payloads, and Earth-science spacecraft.
His first spaceflight was STS-51-G in 1985, where he served as pilot aboard Discovery. The mission deployed communications satellites and carried an international crew.
Creighton later commanded STS-36 and STS-48. STS-36 was a classified Department of Defense mission, while STS-48 deployed the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite for atmospheric science.
After NASA, Creighton worked in aerospace leadership and operations. His career reflects the shuttle commander path from naval aviation through multi-purpose orbital missions.
