Karl Gordon Henize
Karl Gordon Henize was an American astronomer, NASA scientist-astronaut, professor, and shuttle . Selected with NASA's scientist-astronaut group in 1967, he waited nearly two decades before flying aboard Spacelab 2.

Bio
Henize trained as an astronomer at the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan. Before and during his NASA career, he worked at major observatories and contributed to ultraviolet astronomy and stellar catalog work.
He supported Apollo and Skylab operations before his own flight. His only spaceflight was STS-51-F in 1985, the Spacelab 2 mission aboard Challenger, which carried astronomy, solar physics, plasma physics, and life-sciences experiments.
Henize died in 1993 during a Mount Everest while testing equipment connected to NASA research. That later work fits the same pattern as his career: science conducted in demanding environments.
