Bio
Kregel graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and Columbia University, then served as an Air Force pilot and test pilot. Before becoming an astronaut, he also worked as a NASA aerospace engineer and research pilot.
He piloted STS-70 and STS-78, then commanded STS-87 and STS-99. Those missions included TDRS deployment, life and microgravity research, international payload operations, and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission.
Kregel's career shows the shuttle pilot corps at full maturity: operational satellite work, Spacelab research, international payloads, Earth mapping, and command of complex science missions.
