Bio
Tognini served as a French Air Force fighter and test pilot before astronaut selection. He trained through the French astronaut program and later with ESA and NASA, giving him experience across three human-spaceflight systems: Soyuz, Mir, and the Space Shuttle.
His first flight was the Antares mission to Mir in 1992. He launched aboard Soyuz TM-15 and returned aboard Soyuz TM-14 after completing French-Russian research aboard the station.
Tognini's second flight was STS-93 aboard Columbia in 1999, the mission that deployed the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
