Bio
Gutierrez was born in Albuquerque and graduated from the United States Air Force Academy before earning a management graduate degree. His Air Force career included fighter, instructor, and test-pilot assignments before NASA selected him for shuttle training.
He piloted STS-40, the Spacelab Life Sciences-1 mission, which focused on human and animal physiology. He later commanded STS-59, the first Space Radar Laboratory mission, using radar instruments to study Earth's surface, climate, geology, and environmental systems.
After leaving NASA, Gutierrez worked in technical and leadership roles at Sandia National Laboratories and in aerospace companies. His career connects shuttle operations with both national laboratory work and commercial aerospace development.
