Bio
Nagel studied aeronautical and astronautical engineering and mechanical engineering before serving as an Air Force pilot and test pilot. NASA selected him with Astronaut Group 8 in 1978.
He flew STS-51-G and STS-61-A in 1985, then commanded STS-37 and STS-55. Those missions included communications satellites, Spacelab research, and deployment of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory.
After NASA, Nagel worked in flight operations and later taught engineering, continuing to connect aviation and spaceflight experience with education.
