Bio
Pailes graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and later completed graduate study in computer science. His Air Force career connected technical systems work with the military spaceflight program.
He was selected for the Air Force Manned Spaceflight Engineer program and flew aboard Atlantis on STS-51-J, the first flight of Atlantis and a dedicated Department of Defense shuttle mission.
Pailes was not a NASA career astronaut in the same sense as selected into NASA astronaut groups.
