Bio
Shargin came from a military engineering background and was selected to the Russian cosmonaut group in 1996. He trained through a period when Russian crew transport became essential to maintaining permanent ISS occupation.
Soyuz TMA-5 launched in October 2004 with Salizhan Sharipov, Leroy Chiao, and Shargin. He visited the ISS, supported handover and research work, and returned on Soyuz TMA-4 with the previous crew.
Shargin's record is a single short-duration visiting mission, not two separate flights. The launch and landing spacecraft names describe the same completed spaceflight.
