A processing level answers a specific need
Amazonia-1’s archive offers products with different meanings. INPE lists L2-DN with radiometric and geometric correction; L4-DN adds orthorectification but retains digital numbers. L4-SR supplies orthorectified surface-reflectance bands and a cloud-mask layer. A higher level is not a universal quality score. Choose the physical quantity and processing steps needed for the question.
Consider a fictional comparison of two dates. One file stores digital numbers and the other stores surface reflectance. Subtracting their numbers directly would mix representations. Even with the same product type, inspect scale factors, units, nodata flags and versions. If a stored value requires a scale factor, apply the documented rule rather than guessing from its apparent brightness. Keep the original files so later processing changes remain traceable.

Access, geometry and weather are separate
Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF describes a file layout suited to retrieving portions of data over a network. It does not mean weather clouds have been removed. Orthorectification addresses geometric placement; a cloud mask identifies pixels that need quality handling. None of these labels turns an obscured surface into a direct measurement.
In a toy decision, an analyst needs to compare reflectance over a small region. A suitable surface-reflectance product, its metadata and its quality mask may be more useful than downloading the largest available display image. Record the acquisition date separately from processing and download dates. Faster access helps the workflow, but the scientific conclusion still depends on the information inside the file and the evidence excluded by its masks.

Reuse a platform while changing the mission
INPE’s February 2026 anniversary report described Amazonia-1 operating beyond its original four-year design life. That is a dated assessment, not a live health indicator. AEB’s January 2026 announcement describes a contract for Amazonia-1B to launch on Vega-C in 2027. It connects the mission to AQUAE water monitoring and Brazil’s contribution to the Argentina partnership SABIA-Mar. A contracted future launch is not an operational satellite.
The distinction returns to the PMM concept. Reusing services can support a new observing purpose, but continuity for an analyst requires checking instruments, bands, calibration, coverage and product definitions. A successor’s similar name cannot guarantee an interchangeable data series. In a fictional handover, overlapping observations and documented cross-comparisons would help establish whether an apparent shift comes from the environment or from the change of observing system.
