Identify the generation and its members
GOES-R names both a development generation and the first spacecraft’s pre-orbit designation. The four-member series became GOES-16, GOES-17, GOES-18 and GOES-19. The GOES-16 processing photograph shows the first member before flight. Counting GOES-R and GOES-16 as two separate launches would duplicate the same spacecraft; counting the generation as only that one satellite would omit its successors.
The series belongs within the longer GOES program. It includes Earth-looking instruments, Sun-looking instruments and sensors of particles and magnetic fields near the spacecraft. These are different observational tasks. A solar image, a local particle measurement and a map of terrestrial clouds cannot be substituted for one another merely because the same satellite provided them.

Choose an instrument and a scanning scale
The Advanced Baseline Imager, ABI, uses 16 spectral bands. Different bands help characterize clouds, moisture and other environmental features. The Geostationary Lightning Mapper, GLM, detects optical signals associated with lightning, including activity within clouds as well as toward the ground. Combining products provides a richer account of a developing storm than treating every colorful display as the same measurement.
ABI observes different scene sizes under specified scan schedules. Rapid updates of a selected small region do not mean that the whole visible Earth disk is observed at that rate. For a fictional 20-minute study, 1-minute sampling offers ten times as many sampling intervals as 10-minute sampling. It does not automatically provide ten times finer spatial detail; time sampling and pixel scale are separate properties.
GOES-R, later GOES-16, stands vertically during processing at Astrotech in 2016. The two names refer to the same spacecraft; the wider GOES-R series also includes three later members.
Look closely
What would be wrong with counting GOES-R and GOES-16 as two spacecraft here?
See what to notice
They are development and numbered designations of one spacecraft. The program generation and its individual members need separate, consistent identities.

Use multiple clues without overstating certainty
Suppose cloud-top changes coincide with an increase in lightning in a fictional storm. Together they can motivate closer attention, but neither a lightning increase nor a particular image color is a guaranteed tornado diagnosis. Forecasters combine satellite evidence with radar, surface observations and the wider weather situation. An educational exercise should explain evidence and uncertainty rather than substitute for an official warning.
Before comparing two sequences, check their bands, sector boundaries, timestamps and quality information. A missing update could reflect a product or delivery problem; an apparent color change could reflect a new display scale. GOES-R makes frequent, complementary measurements available. Its value comes from matching a question to the actual instrument and product, then testing the interpretation against other evidence.
