A university project connects several communities
Pehuensat-1 grew from cooperation among the Universidad Nacional del Comahue, the Argentine Association of Space Technology and AMSAT Argentina. It launched from India in January 2007 and used amateur-radio reception to connect its educational purpose with a wider audience. The university’s retrospective describes teachers, students and technical staff contributing over a long development period. The mission’s learning value therefore included designing, integrating and testing equipment before anyone received a signal from orbit.
The university reports about six months of activity, followed by continued until reentry in January 2023. Those are different durations: sixteen years in orbit does not mean sixteen years of working communications. The distinction is useful beyond this one mission. An object can remain physically present after its useful service ends, while the skills, records and educational activities associated with its project may continue much longer.

Energy must cover the whole operating cycle
A small satellite needs an energy budget as well as a list of components. Solar input changes with illumination and orientation; stored energy must support tasks during intervals without adequate generation. is a rate, while energy accumulates over time. A transmitter with a modest average duty cycle can still have a significant peak demand. Planning therefore considers both how much energy a sequence consumes and whether the system can supply each task when it occurs.
For an original classroom exercise, a transmitter draws two watts for fifteen minutes. Its energy use is half a because fifteen minutes is one quarter of an hour. A separate one-watt computer running for the full hour uses one watt-hour, twice as much energy despite its lower power. These values are invented and are not Pehuensat specifications. They show why comparing component wattages alone can give the wrong conclusion about which task dominates an operating cycle.
Compare operation, orbit and learning
Original teaching diagram. Activity: useful mission service. Orbital residence: physical presence. Learning: demonstrated understanding. Power × time gives energy. 2 W × 0.25 h = 0.5 Wh. 1 W × 1 h = 1 Wh. Original exercise: the lower-power computer uses more energy because it operates longer.

A later project can ask a new question
The university has also described Pehuensat III as a later small-satellite development intended to relay information from remote locations. A relay concept can carry measurements made by sensors on Earth; it does not require the satellite to directly measure every listed local environmental quantity. Development schedules and expected service life remain plans until supported by later outcomes. The shared family name connects educational experience without making every generation the same spacecraft or mission design.
For a final project, ask students to produce three short records: an engineering test, a reception log and an explanation of what they learned. Each demonstrates something different. A complete reception log cannot alone show that every learner understands the energy calculation, just as a successful classroom calculation does not establish a satellite’s health. Pehuensat connects practical engineering with public education by making those activities reinforce one another, while keeping operation, orbital residence and learning outcomes clear enough to evaluate independently.
