Lesson 6 of 6 · what small bodies reveal about early history
Separate ancient ingredients from later events
10 minute lesson · 3 checks along the way
Your goal for this lessonUse small-body samples to reconstruct distinct formation and processing events without claiming that organic chemistry proves life.

An archive assembled in stages
Some meteorites preserve calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions dated to about 4.567 billion years ago, an important reference for early solar-system chronology. That does not make every component of every exactly the same age. Solids formed, were heated or altered, accumulated into parent bodies, and sometimes survived later collisions. A small body can preserve very ancient ingredients within a much younger arrangement of fragments.
The age of a mineral, the age of parent-body processing, and the assembly age of the present asteroid are different questions. Each needs evidence linked to an event. Isotopic measurements require an appropriate clock and an understanding of later disturbance. A rubble-pile shape does not supply a formation date, just as an old stone in a newly built wall does not date the construction of the wall.
Chemistry records environments
In 2025, analyses of Bennu material returned by OSIRIS-REx reported diverse organic compounds and minerals interpreted as products of ancient brines on Bennu's . Amino acids and nucleobases are scientifically significant because they are relevant to life's chemistry. Their detection does not establish organisms, metabolism, or an inhabited asteroid. Organic describes a broad category of carbon chemistry, including compounds produced without biology.
Salt minerals and water-altered minerals constrain processes through comparison with chemistry and geological models. They are not photographs of an ancient ocean, and they do not demonstrate that liquid water exists on Bennu's surface today. Ryugu samples likewise help investigate alteration and the distribution of early ingredients. Similarities and differences between collections can test proposed histories without forcing every small body into a single identical sequence.
OSIRIS-REx assembled this Bennu view from twelve PolyCam images acquired on December 2, 2018, about 24 kilometers away. The mosaic records surface shape and texture. The later organic-compound and salt-mineral findings came from analysis of returned material, not identification of molecules in this picture.
Look closely
Can the visible boulders reveal the ages of their minerals or demonstrate a past biological process?
See what to notice
The boulders identify physical features to investigate. Numerical mineral ages require interpreted laboratory clocks, and biological claims require evidence beyond organic compounds or surface appearance. Present shape and ancient material history are separate questions.

Work through a decision
Worked timeline: date the event you measured
Consider a fictional sample with minerals recording crystallization 4,560 million years ago and a later alteration event 4,550 million years ago. The interval is 10 million years. In units of billions of years, the same subtraction is 4.560 minus 4.550 = 0.010 billion years. Keeping the units visible prevents a small decimal difference from being mistaken for a brief human timescale.
Suppose imaging and mechanical evidence separately indicate that the current asteroid is an aggregate of fragments, but provide no numerical assembly date. The two mineral ages do not determine that date. They constrain events in the material's earlier history. A defensible timeline labels assembly as unresolved instead of filling the gap with the oldest available number. More observations could narrow the gap; arithmetic cannot create missing evidence.

Choose the next test
Imagine two explanations for a detected : it was present in the extraterrestrial sample, or it was introduced during preparation. A corresponding blank, documented handling, repeated measurements, and comparison among differently processed portions can help distinguish them. Establishing extraterrestrial origin would still leave a separate question about formation mechanism. Evidence that a compound came from space is not equivalent to evidence that life produced it.
Small-body research is powerful because it connects scales: microscopic minerals, sampled terrain, a parent body's evolution, and the wider disk that formed the planets. Write conclusions at the scale actually supported. State which material preserves which event, identify the alternative interpretations, and choose a measurement that could separate them. The result is a history built from linked observations, with unknown chapters kept visible for the next investigation.
