A deep-space site with a long working life
Tidbinbilla’s station began operating in December 1964 and was formally opened in March 1965. The site became the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex. Its own history describes a valley chosen partly for shielding from unwanted radio interference. A deep-space station needs a location from which useful signals can be distinguished from competing emissions, as well as the infrastructure required to operate reliably.
The complex grew beyond its initial 26-metre dish. Later work enlarged a 64-metre antenna to 70 metres and added other antennas and receiver improvements. Voyager 2 connects this development to the scientific exploration of the outer planets. As probes travel farther away, the ground system can help preserve communication without anybody visiting the spacecraft to install a larger transmitter.

Diameter is only part of sensitivity
For circular dishes with comparable efficiency, scales with the square of diameter. In an invented comparison, doubling a dish from twenty to forty metres gives four times the geometric area, not twice. That is a useful first estimate of how much incoming energy a larger surface can collect under matching conditions. It is not an unconditional promise of four times the usable data rate.
Receiver noise, surface accuracy, pointing, radio frequency and signal processing also matter. Comparing two antennas fairly means asking which conditions are held fixed. If one has poorer efficiency or more noise, the area ratio alone cannot predict the result. The actual Canberra upgrades were engineering projects involving more than the outer edge of a dish, so this simple calculation explains one factor rather than reconstructing their exact measured performance.
Area grows with diameter squared
Original teaching diagram. COMPARABLE DISHES. Diameter ratio: 40 ÷ 20 = 2. Same assumed efficiency. GEOMETRIC AREA. Area ratio: 2 × 2 = 4. Data rate needs more information. Original example. Noise, pointing, frequency and processing also affect performance.

Antenna time is an operating resource
A station also requires electrical power, communications to other facilities, maintenance and people able to diagnose problems. A large antenna without those supporting functions cannot deliver a reliable tracking service. The complex’s history includes such practical infrastructure alongside the dishes. Those less visible systems help convert an instrument’s technical potential into repeatable support for distant missions.
Imagine two spacecraft requesting the same antenna during overlapping visibility windows. The equipment might be capable of supporting either individually while the schedule cannot satisfy both at once. Operators need to account for mission priorities, available alternatives and the time required to change configurations. A second antenna or shared receiving arrangement can help in some circumstances, but neither removes every resource conflict. Network capability is best understood as equipment, geometry and planned service working together.
