Share the platform, preserve the mission choices
BIRDS Bus Open Source is Kyutech’s effort to share CubeSat engineering knowledge and technical material. It is a resource and development initiative, rather than another satellite with a launch date. Hardware descriptions, firmware, interface documents, guides and webinars help later teams understand the BIRDS platform. The value includes explaining why parts connect and how a team works, not merely supplying a set of drawings.
A spacecraft bus provides common support such as power distribution, command handling, communications and structural connections. A payload supplies a mission-specific measurement or experiment. The BIRDS documentation describes boards linked through a and shows that configurations can differ with spacecraft size. Reusing a platform can free effort for a new payload, but only when its needs fit the actual supported interfaces and operating limits.

A photograph cannot establish compatibility
The accompanying AstroBio Cubesat photograph is a comparison from another program. It shows a 3U-shaped article with body-mounted solar cells and projecting antenna elements. The image was taken in 2026, after AstroBio’s launch, so it is not identified as the flown article. Its exterior helps you locate physical subsystems; it does not establish that the electronics or commands match a BIRDS design.
Imagine an interface document defines a particular connector pin as a 3.3-volt supply, but a revised board connects that position to a signal line. The boards may fit together perfectly while failing electrically. Before treating files as one buildable design, identify the board revision, matching schematic, firmware version and interface document. A changed label or similar-looking connector cannot substitute for agreement about what each connection does.
Carry evidence with a shared design
Original teaching diagram. DEFINE THE BUILD. Board and firmware revisions. Matching interface document. DEFINE THE TEST. Inputs and interruption point. Recovered data; pass criteria. The next team needs enough information to reproduce the claimed behavior.

Look closely
Can the visible solar cells and antennas establish that this article matches a BIRDS electrical interface?
See what to notice
No. Exterior appearance does not establish internal pin assignments, voltage requirements or software versions. The image is a physical-layout comparison from another program.

Make a result reproducible for the next team
Consider a fictional acceptance requirement: after a simulated power interruption, a stored observation must be recoverable and correctly decoded by the ground software. A useful test record includes the input observation, the interruption point, the tested software and board versions, the recovered packet and the pass criteria. “It worked once” leaves the next team unable to tell which behavior was actually demonstrated.
The public documentation collection contains guides for hardware, software and project management, but a heading in a navigation menu is not evidence of a complete procedure. Inspect the actual material and fill any gap before relying on it. The strongest contribution back to a shared engineering project is a documented correction or improvement that another team can reproduce, including the conditions under which it was tested.
