Radar capability through an international partnership
Lessonia is a Brazilian radar-observation effort within the Programa Estratégico de Sistemas Espaciais, or PESE. Its first Carcará satellites launched in May 2022, with ICEYE supplying the missions for the Brazilian Air Force. Censipam described environmental applications such as monitoring forests, rivers and coastal waters. The national register later added Carcará III and IV and recorded the first pair’s retirement in March 2025. Family continuity should not be confused with an unchanged set of active spacecraft.
This history combines spacecraft supply with domestic operations, analysis and practical uses of the data. A radar image is an observation, while a useful environmental product also requires processing and interpretation. Operators and analysts must know where and when an observation was made and what its measurement represents. Purchasing a satellite or receiving a file does not remove those responsibilities from the rest of the system.

The sensor supplies its own illumination
A radar sends radio waves and measures returned signals. It therefore does not depend on sunlight in the way an ordinary reflected-light camera does, and suitable radar wavelengths can support observations through cloud. The returned signal depends on the surface and observation geometry. Roughness, moisture, orientation and structures can change the return. Brightness in a radar image is not simply the visible color of the ground.
Imagine two observations of the same fictional field, one dry and one after heavy rain. A brighter return in the second image could reflect changed surface conditions rather than a new building. An analyst should compare viewing geometry and acquisition settings and seek relevant independent information. A radar change is useful evidence of a changed measurement; deciding what physical event caused it is a further step that needs support.
From radar signal to a defensible claim
Original teaching diagram. Radar transmits radio energy. Surface and geometry shape return. Processing produces an image. Compare compatible observations. Check competing explanations. Use independent context. A brighter return is not automatically a new structure or a visible-color change.

What can a hardware photograph show that a radar image cannot?
See what to notice
It can show visible structures and deployment context. Interpreting returned surface measurements still requires instrument and observation information.

Build a repeatable observation record
For a monitoring task, define the target question before selecting an image. A flood map, a forest-change alert and a coastline study may need different timing, processing and . Repeated observations help reveal patterns, but unsuitable comparisons can create misleading differences. Retain the acquisition time, processing version and quality information so users can understand both the signal and its limits.
In a classroom exercise, compare two fictional radar maps and list at least two explanations for a changed patch. Then identify an observation that could distinguish those explanations, such as rainfall records or a suitable optical image from a nearby date. Lessonia illustrates how a small-satellite fleet becomes part of a larger information service. Radar expands observing opportunities, while sound interpretation keeps that additional access from turning into unjustified certainty about events on the ground.
