Follow energy, commands and data
FloripaSat 1 was developed by students at SpaceLab, Federal University of Santa Catarina. It launched on December 20, 2019 alongside CBERS-4A. The team’s mission description explains the division between a service platform and payload activities. The electrical power system captures, stores and distributes energy; onboard data handling organizes information; , tracking and command equipment connects the spacecraft with operators on the ground.
The preserved photograph shows the integrated first spacecraft in September 2019. Its exterior panels and compact structure help reveal the packaging constraints, but the image cannot show all software behavior or electrical connections. To understand the spacecraft, follow a function across those boundaries. A command received by the radio must be interpreted by the computer and acted on by the appropriate subsystem, with power available throughout the sequence.

Use test evidence alongside the photograph
UFSC records vibration testing at INPE’s Integration and Testing Laboratory on October 2, 2019. That test history supplies evidence the hardware portrait cannot provide. A launch report later described successful early reception by radio amateurs in several countries. Those are different milestones: surviving a specified ground test, reaching orbit and receiving identifiable transmissions each answer a particular question about the mission.
Imagine a fictional team reusing a successful platform for a new instrument. The replacement fits in the available space but produces more heat and generates larger files. Mechanical fit alone would not establish suitability. The team must reconsider thermal behavior, electrical demand, storage and downlink capacity, then test the relevant changes. Reuse preserves useful work while creating a responsibility to identify which old assumptions still hold.
Reuse evidence, then check what changed
Original teaching diagram. Identify the baseline. List new demands. Review power and data. Review thermal behavior. Test changed interfaces. Record the new version. A family’s previous success and a later launch outcome remain separate historical facts.

Look closely
What can you learn here, and which question needs test records?
See what to notice
The visible structure and panel arrangement show packaging choices. Whether the system survives specified vibration loads or completes a command sequence requires the relevant tests and operating records.

Keep family members and outcomes distinct
The later FloripaSat-2A and FloripaSat-2B were separate spacecraft intended to advance platform validation. AEB’s inventory records both as lost in the December 2025 HANBIT-Nano launch failure. Their presence in prelaunch announcements must not be described as completed in-orbit validation. The successful 2019 launch of the first spacecraft and the unsuccessful later transport attempt belong to different flight histories within the broader development effort.
The original team published documentation and code to make the design more accessible. Open documentation can help successors inspect interfaces and learn from earlier choices, but it does not certify a new automatically. A useful reuse record names the hardware and software versions, explains changes, and ties claims to the applicable tests. FloripaSat connects the visible spacecraft with the less visible engineering record that makes a platform understandable to another team.
