Continuity is a program objective
RADARSAT+ is a portfolio intended to sustain Canada’s access to Earth-observation data. It builds on the RADARSAT lineage, including the three-satellite RADARSAT Constellation Mission, or RCM, launched in 2019. Replenishing an existing constellation and designing a later system address different timescales. A portfolio can pursue both without implying that the successor is simply another identical satellite.
In June 2026, Canada awarded MDA Space a contract to build, test and launch an RCM replenishment satellite, targeting the early 2030s. Separately, the RADARSAT+ portfolio includes concept studies for a next-generation space segment and ground segment. Its continuity work also considers complementary commercial and partner data. A signed development contract establishes authorized work; it does not establish that the spacecraft has launched or passed operational acceptance.

A substitute product must fit the task
Imagine an invented coastal monitoring service that needs a usable scene at least every six hours. Supplier A delivers at 00:00, 06:00 and 12:00. Supplier B offers a scene at 09:00. The extra scene reduces one gap, but it does not show that every later six-hour requirement will be met. A service assessment needs the full schedule and the probability that a planned acquisition becomes a usable product.
Compatibility matters too. Suppose A’s images distinguish features at a twenty-metre scale, while B’s product resolves only a hundred-metre scale. B can be useful for broad patterns but may fail a task that depends on smaller features. These are invented product specifications, not RADARSAT performance claims. Compare acquisition time, spatial resolution, viewing geometry, calibration and permitted uses before treating two files as interchangeable.

Preserve the meaning of a long record
Continuity involves more than keeping a download portal populated. A change in instrument or processing can introduce a step in a time series that resembles environmental change. In a fictional overlap trial, an old system reports values of 10, 12 and 14 while a replacement reports 12, 14 and 16 for matched targets. The consistent difference suggests a calibration or processing question; it does not by itself prove that the environment changed by two units.
Investigate that difference with reference measurements and the relevant uncertainties before applying a correction. Record the instrument, processing version and method so later readers can follow the transition. RADARSAT+ links spacecraft procurement to that larger responsibility: maintaining observations that remain useful and understandable across generations. Replenishment, future design and additional data sources each need evidence against the service requirement they are meant to support.
