Expand from regional service to a global system
BeiDou, also abbreviated BDS, is China’s navigation-satellite system. Its development followed successive stages: BDS-1 supplied service in China beginning in 2000, BDS-2 extended service to the Asia-Pacific region in 2012, and BDS-3 was formally commissioned for global services in 2020. These stages involved changes in system architecture, not simply renaming one satellite.
The program serves positioning, navigation and timing needs, with national infrastructure and security motivations as well as civil applications. The China Satellite Navigation Office publishes interface information, and satellite builders, ground operators and receiver developers contribute different parts of the service. A spacecraft in orbit cannot by itself supply a usable position to someone without a suitable receiving system.

Combine signals with a clock and an orbit model
The later BeiDou system uses satellites in medium Earth orbit together with geostationary and inclined geosynchronous orbits. Ground systems monitor and maintain the service, while users receive appropriate signals. For ordinary , a receiver compares timing information from several satellites with their reported orbital positions to estimate its own location and clock offset.
The early BDS-1 approach included active positioning, so its architecture should not be described as identical to later passive service. BeiDou also has specialized services such as short messaging, which require suitable terminals and service support. Receiving an open navigation signal is therefore different from transmitting a message through the system; not every phone has every BeiDou capability.

Distinguish coverage from the accuracy at one place
A system offering global service does not promise perfect reception inside every building or beside every cliff. Obstructions, reflected signals, atmospheric effects and receiver design affect the result. A receiver combining compatible satellite systems can improve available geometry, but more signals alone do not remove every source of error.
Consider a fictional survey that needs centimeter-level positions. The team should identify its receiver, correction service, antenna setup, environment and validation method rather than assuming that a global constellation automatically provides that performance. BeiDou’s program history explains how the infrastructure developed; a particular user’s accuracy still has to be assessed under the actual conditions of use.
