Put the instrument on the right spacecraft
Sentinel-4 is an ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared carried by a Meteosat Third Generation Sounder satellite. The first instrument launched with MTG-S1 on July 1, 2025. It is a Copernicus payload aboard a weather spacecraft, rather than an independent satellite that happens to share an orbit with one. ESA develops the Sentinel instrument and EUMETSAT operates the host mission.
The geostationary viewpoint keeps the same broad region in view as Earth rotates. Sentinel-4 is designed to revisit Europe and nearby areas frequently, with hourly daytime observations. That schedule addresses changes within a day. It complements the wider geographic coverage of polar-orbiting missions rather than providing an identical observing pattern.

Read absorption rather than ordinary cloud colors
The instrument separates incoming light into wavelength ranges. Atmospheric gases absorb particular wavelengths, leaving patterns that help estimate their amounts. Nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulphur dioxide and other constituents have different spectral signatures. The measurement depends on reflected sunlight, so an hourly daytime design should not be interpreted as a promise of the same observations throughout the night.
Retrieving a gas amount requires calibration, a model of how light traveled through the atmosphere and checks for cloud contamination. A mapped atmospheric amount is not automatically the concentration measured by a monitor beside a particular road. Combining satellite observations with surface measurements and atmospheric models connects broad patterns with conditions nearer the ground.

Ask what changed between morning and afternoon
Consider a fictional city whose nitrogen-dioxide pattern differs between two daytime observations. Emissions may have changed, but winds, atmospheric chemistry and clouds can also affect the comparison. Frequent observations help distinguish a daily sequence from a single snapshot. They do not identify the cause of every change without other evidence.
A useful investigation records observation times, quality and relevant weather. Compare the same variable over a consistent area, and keep missing measurements visible. The advantage of Sentinel-4 is its repeated regional perspective: it supplies more opportunities to follow a developing pattern while leaving the interpretation tied to the actual measurements and their limits.
