Lesson 6 of 6 · Water, interiors, diversity & the next evidence
Turn an open question into a useful test
8 minute lesson · 3 checks along the way
Your goal for this lessonIdentify unresolved formation questions and design an evidence comparison that can change an explanation without overclaiming what a sample proves.

A broad history can leave important details open
A disk origin and an ancient age are strongly supported, but they do not answer every question about our planetary system. How efficiently did different reservoirs exchange material? When did the giant planets rearrange their orbits? Why did some growing worlds retain large gas envelopes while others did not? Each question needs its own discriminating measurements rather than another general statement that planets formed from dust.
The source of Earth’s water is one such problem. Water-bearing material can be incorporated during growth or delivered in later encounters, and subsequent loss and chemical processing complicate the record. Comparing patterns and inventories across possible source materials can test contributions. A similar signature is useful evidence, but a single matching ratio does not identify the entire source population or the exact time of delivery.
Revisit a familiar object with a new measurement
Vesta shows why an apparently settled diagram can deserve revision. Older interpretations emphasized a layered body with a substantial metal core. A study NASA described in 2025 used Dawn tracking and imaging to investigate Vesta’s rotational behavior and internal mass distribution. The inferred structure allowed a very small core or no core, raising new questions about its thermal and collisional history.
This does not establish that Vesta never melted or that every earlier observation was wrong. A proposed explanation must reconcile surface minerals, shape, gravity, and rotation. Different histories may predict similar present features. The productive next step is to identify a measurement or consistency check on which those histories differ, and to keep conclusions conditional on model assumptions and the quality of the data.
Compare the evidence
The world in an image and the material in a laboratory
Match each claim to the measurement that can support it. Surface photography and chemical analysis answer related but distinct questions.
Bennu’s surface mosaic
- When and where
- December 2, 2018 · OSIRIS-REx PolyCam observations
- Purpose
- Document shape and surface texture.
- What it supports
- Twelve images were assembled into a view of the boulder-covered asteroid.
- What remains uncertain
- The mosaic does not identify particular organic molecules or prove their origin.
Returned-material analysis
- When and where
- Results reported January 29, 2025 · Laboratory studies of Bennu samples
- Purpose
- Investigate chemical composition and alteration.
- What it supports
- Researchers identified organic compounds and an assemblage of salts associated with ancient water processing.
- What remains uncertain
- These findings are not a detection of life or proof of a unique delivery history for Earth.
Which source supports a claim about molecules, and what makes its conclusion narrower than “life found”?
Compare your reasoning
The laboratory results support chemical identifications. Organic compounds and water-related minerals can form without organisms; establishing their presence does not identify life.

Work through a decision
Design a comparison using a returned sample
OSIRIS-REx returned material from Bennu in 2023. In January 2025, researchers reported organic molecules and salt minerals whose assemblage records ancient water-related processing. Those findings inform the chemistry available in an asteroid parent body. They do not demonstrate life, an inhabited ocean, or that Bennu itself delivered Earth’s entire water supply. The surface mosaic supplies geological context; laboratory instruments supplied the chemical evidence.
For a fictional follow-up, hypothesis A predicts that a particular mineral association occurs across several independently selected grains; hypothesis B attributes the signal to contamination introduced during handling. Analyze multiple grains, record their histories, and run appropriate blanks through the same preparation. A signal restricted to blanks would undermine the extraterrestrial interpretation. Consistent sample signals absent from adequate blanks would strengthen it without automatically excluding every alternative.
OSIRIS-REx assembled this Bennu view from twelve PolyCam images acquired on December 2, 2018. The mosaic shows surface shape and texture. The organic-molecule and salt-mineral findings discussed here came from laboratory analyses of returned material, not identification by appearance in this view.
Look closely
Can a pale or dark boulder in this mosaic be identified as an organic molecule or a particular salt by color alone?
See what to notice
No. Image tone depends on illumination and surface properties. Chemical identification requires suitable measurements, calibration, and context; the photograph documents the sampled world without substituting for the laboratory evidence.

Use diversity to test the whole explanation
Other planetary systems add a wider comparison. Close-orbit giant planets and systems unlike ours challenge a model that merely reproduces eight familiar planets. Discovery methods also favor particular masses, sizes, and orbital periods, so detected examples are not an unbiased census. A formation theory should predict distributions that can be passed through those observational limits before being compared with a survey.
Build a useful question by naming the competing explanations, the observation they predict differently, and the possible result that would change your view. Keep the scale of the claim matched to the measurement: a grain constrains a grain and its context before it explains a whole system. New evidence can improve chronology, transport, and assembly models while leaving the broader disk framework intact. Uncertainty becomes a guide to the next investigation.
