Measure a round trip
Radio measures a signal’s travel time after accounting for known delays. In a simplified fixed-separation model, distance is c times the propagation interval divided by two, because the signal travels out and back. Real processing also accounts for station motion, propagation media, clock behavior and other effects.
Consider an invented exchange lasting 2.004 s, including a calibrated 0.004 s turnaround delay. Propagation occupies 2.000 s. With rounded c = 300,000 km/s, the one-way distance is 300,000 km. Multiplying the entire recorded interval by c would include the wrong delay and both path legs.

Range rate is not the whole velocity
A coherent radio signal’s helps constrain motion along the line of sight. A single radial- value does not determine the two transverse velocity components. Range, Doppler and measurements over time are fitted with a trajectory model to estimate a fuller state.
Two fictional spacecraft could have the same instantaneous distance and radial speed while moving differently across the sky. An additional angular observation or a longer sequence can distinguish possibilities. This is a geometry problem, not a reason to discard the radio measurement.

Images add directional information
Optical can measure a destination against background stars or use resolved surface features and a shape model. Camera calibration, pointing, timing and illumination affect the inference. The object’s apparent size or position is evidence interpreted through a model, not an automatic exact distance.
For an original scale example, if a small object’s known width is doubled while its measured small angular width stays the same, the inferred distance doubles under the same simple geometry. If the physical width is uncertain, that uncertainty carries into the distance. A sharper picture alone does not remove an uncertain size model.
Remove the wait, then count one leg
Fixed separation · rounded c = 300,000 km/s RECORDED EXCHANGE 2.004 s total − 0.004 s delay = 2.000 s The remainder is outward plus return propagation time. ONE-WAY DISTANCE 300,000 km/s × 2.000 s ÷ 2 = 300,000 km The factor of two accounts for the two signal paths. Real ranging also models motion, clocks and propagation effects.

Fit, compare and update
An orbit determination compares predicted observables with measured ones. The differences, called , help evaluate and improve the fit. A small residual in one data type is not proof that every state component is accurate; biased measurements or a weak geometry can hide errors.
After a maneuver, collect new evidence and update the solution. Report its , frame and uncertainty along with the state. Combining radio and optical information is powerful because their constraints differ, provided the calibration and physical assumptions are appropriate.
