Define a complete human-spaceflight capability
Gaganyaan is India’s program to develop and demonstrate a human-spaceflight capability. Its architecture joins a human-rated version of LVM3 with an orbital module, crew support, training, mission control and recovery. Launching a vehicle is only one part of the intended journey: people must also live in the spacecraft, return through the atmosphere and be recovered after landing.
The orbital module includes a and a with different functions. The crew module provides the habitable and returning part of the system, while the service module supplies support in orbit. The crew escape system addresses emergencies during launch and ascent. These roles should remain distinct instead of calling every attached component a capsule or assuming that one subsystem covers every emergency.

Use test articles to answer specific questions
TV-D1 flew on October 21, 2023, to demonstrate an in-flight abort sequence, crew-module separation, descent and recovery. Its test module was an unpressurized article representative of the intended size and mass, with instrumentation and the systems needed for that experiment. It was not a crewed orbital mission, and its configuration was not identical to a complete operational crew spacecraft.
In August 2025, the first integrated air-drop test demonstrated the parachute-based deceleration sequence in a representative terminal-descent scenario. Dropping an instrumented article from a helicopter can test that part of the mission without reproducing orbital entry heating or an entire launch. A useful test isolates relevant conditions while clearly stating what it does not cover.
ISRO photographed the LVM3-M4 launch carrying Chandrayaan-3 on July 14, 2023. This robotic lunar mission supplies related launcher-family context for Gaganyaan, which requires additional human-rating work. The image does not depict a Gaganyaan crew flight, an abort experiment or a test of orbital life support. Resized and compressed from the official original.
Look closely
What additional evidence would be needed before using this robotic launch to claim readiness to carry people?
See what to notice
The human-spaceflight configuration and its additional requirements need relevant qualification and integrated evidence. A successful robotic launch is useful heritage, not proof of every crew requirement.

Connect evidence without overstating readiness
For a fictional readiness review, create separate entries for launch performance, escape, orbital life support, entry protection, parachutes, recovery and crew operations. Identify the evidence needed for each entry and how the systems interact. A successful escape test is important evidence, but it does not by itself demonstrate that the life-support system can support the planned orbital mission.
The Chandrayaan-3 launch photograph in this lesson supplies context for the LVM3 family. It shows a robotic mission on the related launcher, not a Gaganyaan crew flight. involves additional requirements and verification. This introduction uses documented development milestones and program architecture; intended crew numbers, duration and future flights remain plans unless supported by their own completed-flight records.
