Reach Mars and operate across the distance
India’s Mars Orbiter Mission, also known as Mangalyaan or MOM, launched on PSLV-C25 on November 5, 2013 and entered Mars orbit on September 24, 2014. ISRO designed it to demonstrate interplanetary navigation, communication, onboard autonomy and orbital operations while carrying a compact scientific payload. Launch, cruise and arrival were separate milestones in a demanding sequence.
The mission involved spacecraft and instrument centres, the Indian deep-space ground system and operations teams. A command sent from Earth cannot arrive instantaneously at Mars. Engineers therefore needed to plan activities and fault responses that could proceed within onboard limits while the ground team waited for signals. This is a practical reason for autonomy, rather than a claim that a spacecraft makes unrestricted scientific decisions.

Use the orbit as part of the observing design
MOM’s elongated orbit offered changing distances from the planet. Nearer views could resolve smaller features, while distant views could include the entire disk. The Mars Colour Camera produced geographic and atmospheric context, including observations useful for studying dust and seasonal changes. A large field of view and fine surface detail are different observing advantages.
Other instruments addressed atmospheric composition, ultraviolet hydrogen emission and thermal infrared measurements. The presence of a Methane Sensor for Mars in the payload list should not be turned into a claim that the mission proved methane, its origin or life. Instrument goals and demonstrated scientific results need separate records. To interpret a result, ask what was measured, under which conditions, and whether a competing explanation fits the observations.
MOM: read geometry before interpreting change
Original teaching diagram. Nearer observation. Smaller area with finer surface detail. Record range, scale and illumination. More distant observation. Broader context or the full disk. Compare atmospheric and regional patterns. Illustrative comparison: different viewing geometry is not automatically physical change.

Distinguish the planned life from the actual record
The original design lifetime in Mars orbit was six months; operations extended for years. ISRO reported losing contact following a long eclipse in April 2022, and its September 2022 review concluded that recovery was not possible. The agency inferred exhausted propellant and inability to maintain the attitude required for sustained power. That assessment is more precise than claiming someone directly inspected the distant spacecraft’s empty tanks.
For a fictional comparison, place a close-up image beside a and record time, distance, scale and illumination before discussing surface change. A feature’s apparent size can change because the viewing geometry changed. MOM’s returned observations remain available for study after spacecraft operations end. Its engineering achievement and scientific value should each be described with evidence appropriate to that claim.
