A cabin holds a changing mixture
A pressure vessel keeps an internal atmosphere separate from the surrounding environment. Inside, crew activity and equipment continually change that atmosphere. People consume oxygen, release carbon dioxide and water vapor, and generate heat. Materials and activities can introduce other contaminants. Maintaining a cabin therefore requires ongoing sensing and control, not just filling it before launch.
NASA describes environmental control and life support as a collection of functions, including pressure control, oxygen supply, , contaminant management and water handling. A single oxygen tank addresses only part of that collection. The habitat needs a way to observe and manage the mixture through ordinary activity and changing operating conditions.

Composition and pressure are different
A gas fraction tells you what share of the mixture a gas represents. combines that fraction with the total pressure. In an idealized mixture, a fraction of 0.20 at a total pressure of 100 arbitrary pressure units gives a partial pressure of 20 units. At total pressure 50 with the same fraction, it gives 10.
These fictional values teach the relationship, not a recommended cabin atmosphere. The example shows why an oxygen percentage alone cannot establish a habitable condition. Total pressure, other gases, exposure conditions and material compatibility also matter. The requirements for an actual vehicle come from its complete human and engineering design.
Fraction is not partial pressure
Original teaching diagram. FICTIONAL MIXTURE A. Gas fraction: 0.20. Total 100 → partial 20. FICTIONAL MIXTURE B. Same fraction: 0.20. Total 50 → partial 10. Arbitrary pressure units illustrate arithmetic, not a recommended breathing atmosphere.

Maintain the atmosphere where people use it
A sensor describes the air reaching that sensor, which may not represent every location in a poorly mixed cabin. Ventilation moves air through occupied areas and treatment equipment. Leaks and blocked flow paths can change the system even while a supply tank remains full.
Trace one breath through a fictional habitat: oxygen reaches an occupied area, exhaled gas enters the circulating flow, treatment removes unwanted constituents and monitoring checks the resulting condition. The loop makes the dependencies visible. A working supply component cannot compensate for every failure elsewhere in the chain.
