Predictions begin with observations
Tracking observations constrain an object’s position and motion. Analysts fit a trajectory and propagate it forward, accounting for relevant forces and planned maneuvers where known. Measurement limits and imperfect models leave uncertainty around the prediction. The nominal path is a best estimate, not an exact painted line in space.
A is a predicted close approach. Screening identifies cases for further analysis; it is not an announcement that a collision will occur. The assessment needs both objects’ predicted motion and the quality of the information supporting it.

Miss distance is only part of the picture
Imagine a fictional report predicting a 600-meter closest separation. Without the encounter geometry, object dimensions and uncertainties, that number is incomplete. Two reports with the same nominal can imply different risks if their uncertainty regions differ.
Collision probability estimates combine a model of relative position uncertainty with the region in which the objects would physically overlap. Such estimates depend on assumptions and data quality. Larger uncertainty does not always produce a larger calculated probability, so a low value cannot be interpreted independently of the model that produced it.
A close approach is a prediction

A smaller reported probability is not automatically stronger evidence when the underlying uncertainty is poorly characterized.

New data should change the assessment
Additional observations can shift the nominal trajectory and reshape uncertainty. Compare a sequence of dated solutions rather than treating the first alert as immutable. A maneuver not included in a forecast can also make that forecast inappropriate for the updated trajectory.
For a classroom review, list the time of closest approach, nominal separation, uncertainty description, last observation and known planned actions. Then identify what is missing. This is a way to evaluate an explanation, not an operational rule for commanding a satellite. Real decisions use the responsible operator’s validated process and current data.
