A station grows through connected missions
China’s station development included earlier Tiangong laboratories and the later modular station. Tianhe, the core module of the modular complex, launched in 2021. Wentian and Mengtian laboratory modules followed in 2022. The name Tiangong should therefore be read with its date and object context rather than assumed to identify one unchanged vehicle.
The modular station provides an orbital workplace, while Shenzhou spacecraft transport crews and Tianzhou spacecraft deliver cargo. Launch vehicles, ground facilities and control teams support those operations. A station program is the connected effort; a module, transport craft or launch is one part of it.

Build and verify the integrated configuration
Mengtian’s October 2022 launch and subsequent docking and repositioning were distinct steps toward the station’s three-module configuration. The final arrangement required more than placing each piece somewhere in orbit. Connections and orientation had to support the intended operation of the combined complex.
In a fictional integration exercise, a laboratory arrives with instruments but has not completed its power and data checks. Arrival is established; full research readiness is not. This same distinction helps interpret real announcements that describe launch, rendezvous, docking, or routine use.

Compare by function and documented scope
An informative comparison with the ISS considers research facilities, crew and cargo transport, interfaces and ground support. It should also distinguish institutional arrangements: the ISS partnership and China’s station program have different histories and governance. Their visible resemblance as orbital structures does not make their responsibilities identical.
China’s station research opportunity materials describe scientific facilities and participation arrangements at specified dates. A proposal or selected experiment is not automatically a completed result. Use mission records to establish what flew and research publications to evaluate findings. This lesson uses the completed 2021–2022 assembly milestones without presenting an old planning document as a current schedule.
