A route can be measured again
A 2017 study by Karachevtseva and colleagues combined LRO images and archived surface panoramas to reconstruct Lunokhod 2’s route. It reported 39.16 kilometers, compared with the mission-era estimate of 37 kilometers. The changed estimate came from reinterpreting evidence, not from the rover resuming travel.
In an original mapping exercise, a rough route connects a few known stops with straight lines. A more detailed map follows bends between those stops and produces a longer path. Both estimates need a method and uncertainty. More decimal places alone do not establish accuracy, and a straight-line distance between endpoints is not the total distance driven.

An optical target outlives its wheels
Murphy and colleagues reported renewed laser ranging to Lunokhod 1 after LRO images identified its location in 2010. Its reflector was French-built. Laser light sent from Earth could be returned by the reflector without restarting the rover’s powered driving systems. This is a Soviet mission with an identifiable international instrument contribution.
For an original ranging model, a pulse travels to a target and back. If the round-trip time is t and light speed is c, the one-way distance is c × t ÷ 2. Real lunar ranging needs many additional corrections, but the division by two is essential even in the simplest model. Receiving a reflected pulse is evidence about an optical path, not proof of an active radio transmitter.

Preserve enough to ask another question
The mapping and laser-ranging cases illustrate different kinds of continuing value: a historical route can be reconstructed from images, while a passive instrument can remain useful after vehicle operations end. Neither should be described as a new rover expedition. Scientific usefulness and active spacecraft operation are separate states.
In an original archive exercise, you can retain either a striking image alone or the image with its acquisition time, scale, location, credit and source identity. The second preserves more ways to check a future interpretation. A similar name is insufficient evidence of identity: a photograph of a Mars crater named for Lunokhod 2 is not a photograph of the lunar rover.
