Divide the scientific questions between partners
BepiColombo launched in October 2018 as a joint ESA–JAXA investigation of Mercury. ESA’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter, MPO, is designed to study the surface and interior; JAXA’s Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter, Mio, focuses on the magnetic field and surrounding plasma. Different orbits and complementary instruments are intended to connect the planet with its space environment.
A shared mission does not make the two spacecraft interchangeable. To interpret a future combined dataset, researchers will need to know which instrument measured which quantity, at what location and time. Two observation points can help distinguish spatial structure from change through time, but coordination and calibration remain necessary to make that comparison meaningful.

Separate the cruise system from the science orbiters
The Mercury Transfer Module, MTM, carried for the interplanetary journey. Planetary flybys and long thrusting periods shaped the approach. Solar-electric thrusters accelerate propellant using electrical power; sunlight supplies energy but does not remove the need for reaction mass. Their role differs from the chemical propulsion used for later maneuvers by MPO.
A cruise configuration also constrains instrument access and viewing directions. The full capabilities intended for independent science orbits cannot simply be assumed during every . Mission diagrams should label the configuration as well as the date: a connected stack in transit and two separated orbiters are different operating arrangements within the same program.
BepiColombo launched on an Ariane 5 in October 2018. The spacecraft were enclosed in the rocket’s payload fairing. This photograph documents departure from Earth; later navigation and operations reports establish the subsequent cruise milestones and Mercury arrival status.
Look closely
Can the launch photograph establish that the science orbiters have entered their Mercury orbits?
See what to notice
No. Launch and Mercury orbit insertion are separate events. Dated flight operations evidence is needed to establish which later milestones have occurred.

Read the arrival milestones as a sequence
ESA’s updates reviewed on October 14, 2026 confirm that MTM separated on September 3 and describe subsequent MPO propulsion and instrument checks. Mercury is scheduled for November 21, 2026, followed by separation of the science orbiters and preparation for the science phase. Those later milestones remain plans in this dated account, not completed observations.
Consider a fictional headline that calls a successful instrument test “Mercury fully mapped.” The test supports a claim about instrument readiness under the tested conditions; mapping requires the later observations, coverage and processing. BepiColombo’s archive card tracks the mission, while dated operational reports establish which steps have occurred. Keeping these levels distinct gives readers an accurate way to follow a mission whose most important science is still ahead.
