A proposed service near the lunar south pole
Qosmosys and Sodern announced a development memorandum with a March 2025 dateline for TRIOPS, a proposed positioning, navigation and timing project near the Moon’s south pole. Sodern’s optical and navigation expertise was identified as a potential contribution. The announcement establishes a collaboration framework. It does not document an operating network, measured coverage or a completed deployment around the lunar surface.
Position tells a user where it is in a defined reference system. Orientation describes how it is turned. Timing supplies the clock information needed to interpret measurements and coordinate activities. These quantities interact, but they are not interchangeable. A rover could know which way it is pointing while remaining uncertain about where it is on a map or how its clock compares with a reference.

Follow an error through a measurement
Imagine a fictional one-way ranging system that estimates distance from signal travel time. Light travels about three hundred meters in one microsecond, so an uncorrected one-microsecond timing error can correspond to roughly three hundred meters of range error. This simplified example assumes the path and timing model are known; it is not a TRIOPS performance specification or a description of its final architecture.
Combining several measurements can help constrain a position, but geometry matters. References spread across useful directions can provide different information from references clustered along nearly the same line. Terrain can also block a line of sight. A service claim therefore needs to specify where it works, which signals or references it uses, what accuracy is achieved and under which visibility and operating conditions.
Three outputs a user must distinguish
Original teaching diagram. Position: where am I?. Orientation: how turned?. Time: which reference?. Check visible geometry. State frame and errors. Measure availability. Illustrative one-way ranging: one microsecond corresponds to about 300 meters.

Turn component heritage into system evidence
An optical component with previous flight experience can reduce some development uncertainty. It still needs to be integrated and tested for the new task. A star tracker can help determine orientation from a star field; that result alone does not establish a rover’s complete surface position or the availability of a regional service. Additional measurements, models and reference information are needed for the intended navigation solution.
TRIOPS makes the distinction between a capable supplier and a verified service especially clear. The planned service must define interfaces for users, reference frames, timing, coverage and error reporting. A useful demonstration would test those outputs under representative conditions and communicate limitations. As the project develops, records of actual experiments should be added to the partnership history rather than inferred from the reputation or past missions of its participants.
