Lesson 4 of 4 · Testing the launch system
Testing the launch system
6 minute lesson · 3 checks along the way
Your goal for this lessonEvaluate component, integrated and operational evidence without claiming that one test proves everything.

Move from parts to the assembled stage
NASA used structural test articles to assess major core-stage components and put the Artemis I flight stage through functional testing at Stennis. These tests address different questions: can the structure withstand the relevant loads, and can the assembled systems operate together under the test conditions?
A ground firing can reveal propulsion and control behavior that an inspection cannot. An inspection can reveal manufacturing or handling conditions that a numerical simulation might omit. Neither method is universally superior; its value depends on the claim being tested and the conditions it represents.

Ground operations belong in the system
The launcher needs facilities, propellant-loading procedures and people able to operate them. NASA’s October 2026 status discusses a planned short-stack tanking test and crew ground rehearsals. Those activities prepare parts of the mission; they do not constitute launch, orbital flight or a successful lunar mission.
Suppose a tanking rehearsal loads the vehicle successfully but reveals that an emergency exit route takes too long. The loading result remains useful, while the human-operation requirement needs further work. Reviewing them separately avoids either discarding good evidence or hiding the unresolved problem behind it.
Match the evidence to the claim
Original teaching diagram. Structural test: load resistance. Functional test: system operation. Ground rehearsal: procedures and interfaces. Flight: the flown configuration and conditions. No single row establishes every requirement.

A flight result feeds the next configuration
Successful flight is strong evidence for the configuration and conditions that actually occurred. It does not automatically certify every new payload, new stage or changed ground interface. Track what changed, which requirements are affected and what new evidence is needed.
In a final teaching case, replacing an upper stage changes the location of an umbilical and the sequence of commands. The engine’s own heritage may reduce some uncertainty, but the new installation still needs interface verification. SLS offers a way to study this broader principle: a launch system is a coordinated set of hardware, facilities, procedures and people.
