Living tissues respond to use
Muscles and bones are living tissues that respond to mechanical loading and other biological conditions. In orbital free fall, standing and moving do not impose the same sustained weight-bearing demands as on Earth. Without suitable countermeasures, changes in muscle size, strength and endurance and in bone properties can affect later performance.
involves ongoing formation and resorption, rather than a skeleton remaining inert until something breaks. NASA’s bone-risk account explains why reduced loading is relevant to bone loss. The effect is not necessarily identical in every bone or person, and a mission’s exercise and nutrition conditions matter.

Measure the outcome you are claiming
A study may measure mineral density, tissue structure, muscle volume, strength or task performance. These quantities are related but not interchangeable. A scan showing a change in muscle volume does not directly state how quickly a person can complete a particular surface task; that requires an appropriate performance measure.
Use fictional data to practice a percentage comparison. A measurement falls from 100 arbitrary units before a study to 96 afterward. The change is −4 units, or a 4% decrease from the baseline. This is invented arithmetic, not an expected astronaut loss rate and not a forecast for every month in space.
An average does not describe everyone

Look beyond the mean
Suppose four fictional participants change by −1%, −2%, −5% and −8%. The average is −4%, but none of those values equals the average. Reporting only the mean conceals individual variation. The study also needs its measurement uncertainty, duration and context.
Exercise equipment can supply resistance without relying on ordinary Earth weight, helping restore useful loading during flight. Its effectiveness is evaluated through measurements and performance outcomes. A photograph of someone exercising demonstrates an activity; it does not alone establish that every bone or muscle outcome remained unchanged. Evidence connects the prescribed activity, its actual use and the result.
