Start with the delivery problem
The European Vega launcher entered flight in 2012 and served small spacecraft, including Earth-observation missions using near-polar orbits. It is unrelated to the Soviet Vega probes sent toward Venus and Halley’s Comet. In this course, Vega means the European launch program and its evolving vehicles.
Consider an original mission-planning case: a small environmental satellite needs a particular orbit during a useful observation season. A large rocket may have enough mass capacity, yet its available shared flight could go somewhere else. Launcher selection must connect destination, schedule and spacecraft accommodation rather than rank rockets only by size.

One program, several responsibilities
Vega was developed through an ESA partnership with strong Italian industrial participation. Avio, based in Italy, has served as prime contractor and manufacturer; ESA has overseen launcher qualification. Operations take place at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. These are different responsibilities, and the location of the pad does not identify every contributor.
The pad photograph shows a complete Vega with its P80FW first stage integrated into the stack before the 2015 Sentinel-2A launch. It provides launch-site context for the engine archive card. It cannot reveal every internal component or demonstrate the performance of an engine in isolation.
Original Vega before the Sentinel-2A launch in 2015. The complete vehicle provides context for P80FW; the photograph does not expose its internal motor structure. Display image resized and compressed.
Look closely
What can the exterior image establish about the first stage?
See what to notice
It identifies placement within the assembled vehicle, while internal construction and measured performance require other records.

Keep the generations distinct
The original Vega’s final flight carried Sentinel-2C in September 2024. Vega-C is its successor, with changed stages and greater payload accommodation. A final flight for one configuration therefore does not mean that the entire program ended. This course follows selected development milestones through the December 2024 return to flight, not a complete current launch manifest.
Make a two-column comparison for an original planning exercise: configuration on one side and evidence on the other. A launch outcome belongs to a named configuration and flight. Transfer a lesson about verification between generations when relevant, but do not silently transfer every component, payload limit or failure cause.
