See the skill behind manufactured flight hardware

Technicians and manufacturing teams machine parts, assemble electronics, route harnesses, prepare surfaces and build complex structures. Their work turns a specification into actual hardware with measurable properties. Small differences in dimensions, cleanliness or workmanship — open definition can matter even when two parts look similar in a photograph.

The production record identifies materials, process steps, tools and inspections. It also preserves which version was built. A test result for one configuration does not automatically qualify an apparently similar item made with a different process or unreviewed substitution.

Apollo spacesuits combined fabrics, pressure-retaining layers, joints and life-support interfaces. ILC’s development and production work and the broader certification effort show that sewing and assembly were part of a life-support system, not merely costume making. Skilled fabrication had to meet requirements for fit, pressure behavior and movement.

Inspection and testing complement one another. A visual check can find some workmanship problems, while dimensional measurement, leak testing or other specified methods address different properties. No single inspection sees every possible defect; the plan should match the relevant failure mechanisms.

Suppose a fictional bracket’s measured hole spacing falls outside its drawing tolerance. The technician should record the discrepancy — open definition and route it through the approved engineering process rather than silently forcing the part into place. The eventual decision may involve rework, replacement or an evaluated disposition.

This example is about the logic of traceability — open definition, not a procedure for building flight hardware. Documentation protects the ability to understand what was actually flown and why it was accepted. Credit the people who make, inspect and maintain the article as part of the mission team, including work that never appears in a launch broadcast.
