Place in spaceflight history
Vaughan supervised the segregated West Area Computing unit, advocated for the careers of its mathematicians, became an expert FORTRAN programmer, and contributed to the Scout launch-vehicle program after NACA became NASA.
Her technical leadership developed both computing capability and a generation of mathematicians and engineers whose work supported NASA's early space program.
