Korolev directed the design bureaus that adapted the R-7 for orbital launches, placed the first satellite in orbit, sent the first person into space aboard Vostok, flew Voskhod crews, and began the Soyuz and Soviet lunar programs.
His systems organization produced the launch vehicles and spacecraft behind the earliest human-spaceflight milestones, although his identity and role were concealed by the Soviet state during his lifetime.
