Communications with two public roles
SGDC, the Satélite Geoestacionário de Defesa e Comunicações Estratégicas, launched on May 4, 2017 aboard Ariane 5 from French Guiana. The program links Telebras, defense institutions and other Brazilian partners, with knowledge transfer associated with the French manufacturer. Its Ka-band communications support broadband connectivity, while X-band capacity serves the armed forces. These different uses share a spacecraft but have distinct users and operating arrangements.
A geostationary satellite appears near a fixed direction in the sky for a ground observer because its orbit follows Earth’s rotation. This can support ground terminals aimed toward the same region of the sky. The useful system still includes antennas, terminal electronics, gateways, terrestrial networks and operations staff. An orbit and a coverage footprint establish part of the design, not every household’s or institution’s ability to use it.

Separate the speed of signals from data capacity
Imagine a simplified ground-to-satellite-to-ground path totaling 72,000 kilometers. At roughly 300,000 kilometers per second, light needs about 0.24 seconds for that path, before processing and other network delays. A request followed by a reply would involve additional travel. This is an illustrative propagation calculation, not a measured SGDC service guarantee or the exact path for every pair of terminals.
describes how much information can be transferred over time. describes how long a particular exchange takes. Increasing capacity does not make radio signals travel faster than light. A connection can transfer a large file effectively while still feeling delayed in a conversation. Assess the task: bulk delivery, interactive calling and short control exchanges can be affected differently by the same network characteristics.
Keep three communications measures separate
Original teaching diagram. Coverage: where possible. Capacity: data per time. Latency: exchange delay. Install and commission. Connect ground networks. Measure user experience. Illustrative 72,000 km path ÷ 300,000 km/s = 0.24 s propagation time.

Measure access where people use it
Telebras describes SGDC as supporting schools, health services and other remote users. To evaluate an actual connection, check that a terminal is installed, powered, commissioned and connected to the required services. Also consider available capacity and operating conditions. A community inside a satellite footprint may still lack the equipment, maintenance or service arrangement needed to benefit from it. Coverage and adoption should not be reported as the same measurement.
A useful service report distinguishes the spacecraft, its and the experience of users. For a fictional school, successful might include a working application test under representative use, not merely a photograph of a dish. Reliability records and support arrangements then matter over the following months. SGDC demonstrates how a national space project becomes public infrastructure through sustained operations and the rest of the communications chain.
