Generation and availability are different
A power source’s peak output does not tell you how much energy reaches equipment over a complete operating cycle. Solar generation depends on illumination and system conditions. Storage, conversion losses and distribution determine whether the loads can continue when generation falls below demand.
At a lunar site, the relevant dark interval depends on location and terrain. Do not assume every site has one identical schedule. A reliable proposal states its selected environment and traces the longest relevant interruption alongside normal operations, rather than quoting a favorable average alone.

Calculate a transparent minimum
For a fictional habitat load of 2 kilowatts over a 30-hour generation outage, the delivered energy requirement is 60 kilowatt-hours. If the storage path delivers 80 percent of the energy put into it, at least 75 kilowatt-hours must be supplied to that path for this simplified case.
This arithmetic excludes reserves, changing loads, aging and other losses unless explicitly included. It is not a real lunar habitat specification. Naming these omissions makes the calculation useful: a reviewer can see which assumptions must be expanded before the model supports an actual design.
Bridge the interruption: fictional example
Original teaching diagram. Delivered demand. 2 kW × 30 hours. 60 kWh needed. 80% delivery efficiency. 60 ÷ 0.8. 75 kWh input minimum. This simplified example excludes reserve, aging and changing loads.

Compare complete systems
NASA’s December 2024 architecture update described selecting fission as primary surface power for its Mars planning. That is a dated planning decision, not evidence that a crewed Mars power plant has operated there. Generation concepts still require supporting hardware, heat rejection, deployment and maintenance.
Compare fictional options through delivered energy, mass, site constraints, failures and repair capability. Two generators connected to one vulnerable distribution unit may not provide independent service. Diversity of sources can help with some failures, but the complete power path must be traced before claiming resilience.
