Finding material starts a chain
, or ISRU, means using material available at the destination. A useful resource claim must connect its presence to access, extraction, processing, product quality and delivery. Detecting a substance does not establish that it is concentrated enough, reachable enough or economical enough for the proposed use.
The chain also consumes equipment, power and time. A process that reduces imported material may require imported machinery and replacement parts. A meaningful comparison includes these supporting demands and identifies which steps have actually been tested under relevant conditions.

Read a demonstration at its demonstrated scale
MOXIE, carried by Perseverance, produced oxygen from the Martian atmosphere. NASA reported in September 2023 that the experiment had produced 122 grams in total. That result demonstrated an important process on Mars; it did not supply the complete oxygen needs of a crewed expedition.
Scaling such a process involves throughput, duration, reliability, collection and storage, among other interfaces. A small successful demonstration is valuable precisely because its conditions and output are documented. Calling it a complete settlement supply system would erase the additional work the evidence has not yet established.
Follow the material: fictional example
Original teaching diagram. Material present. 100 kg feedstock × 10%. 10 kg target material. Recovered product. 10 kg × 60% recovery. 6 kg before further losses. Concentration, recovery and product purity are different measures.

Separate abundance from recovery
In a fictional processing example, 100 kilograms of feedstock contains 10 percent desired material by mass. The theoretical amount present is 10 kilograms. If the process recovers 60 percent of that amount, the usable recovered quantity is 6 kilograms, before any further quality losses.
These teaching numbers are not a measured lunar deposit or a proposed mission plant. They show why grade and recovery are different factors. A site with a high concentration can still be difficult to work, and a recovery figure does not by itself describe product purity. Follow the mass balance through the whole process.
