Different tests answer different questions
Before regular crew rotations, a new transportation system has to build evidence through ground tests, simulations and flight tests. An abort test investigates an emergency function; an uncrewed orbital test examines a different part of the mission. A crewed test adds people and the need to evaluate their interaction with the system.
For Crew Dragon, NASA’s November 2020 certification account describes evidence from ground work, uncrewed demonstration, abort testing and Demo-2. No single photograph of a launch stands in for that combined record.

Demo-2 was a test mission
Robert L. Behnken and Douglas G. Hurley launched on Demo-2 on May 30, 2020 and returned on August 2. NASA then analyzed the flight evidence as part of its certification work. The agency announced certification of the SpaceX crew transportation system in November, before Crew-1’s operational rotation.
This sequence distinguishes a successful test flight from the formal decision based on the wider evidence. It also distinguishes the spacecraft from the complete system: NASA’s certification account includes Falcon 9 and associated ground systems alongside Crew Dragon.

Why is this Crew-1 image useful beside a discussion of Demo-2?
See what to notice
It shows the later operational mission’s spacecraft preparation, while the caption keeps it distinct from the earlier test flight.

Evidence has a configuration and a limit
In a hypothetical verification table, four requirements concern escape, docking, reentry and recovery. Passing three leaves one requirement open; it does not produce a 75-percent permission to carry a crew. Requirements differ in importance and the acceptance decision depends on the complete applicable standard.
After certification, individual flights still need preparation and review. A changed component or operating condition may require additional analysis or testing. Certification records a decision about a defined system and evidence set, not a promise that every later flight is risk-free.
