Build a system around complementary spacecraft
EPS Second Generation, EPS-SG, succeeds the first EUMETSAT Polar System with new Metop-SG spacecraft and a comprehensive . Its architecture uses successive pairs of A-type and B-type satellites. Those letters identify complementary payload designs; they do not mean one is a spare copy of the other. The first A spacecraft launched in August 2025.
The A type combines and imaging, including the hosted Copernicus Sentinel-5 spectrometer. The B type carries a different suite emphasizing microwave, submillimetre and scatterometer measurements. A full program includes planned successive generations, but a lesson should distinguish that design from the deployment status of each individual spacecraft.

Match instruments to physical questions
IASI-NG develops the heritage of the original infrared atmospheric sounder, with spectral measurements supporting temperature, moisture and composition retrievals. Other instruments add complementary views of aerosols, clouds, winds and surfaces. The Ice Cloud Imager is designed to investigate cloud-ice properties through submillimetre observations, extending information beyond an ordinary visible cloud picture.
The archived METOP-SG A1 photograph shows the spacecraft inside Airbus’s Astrolabe facility in Toulouse in November 2023. It documents assembly before launch, not a completed weather-data product. An impressive payload still needs environmental testing, calibration, ground processing and validation. Each step supplies evidence for a different aspect of readiness.
METOP-SG A1 stands inside Airbus’s Astrolabe facility in Toulouse during a November 2023 press visit. The photograph records prelaunch assembly, before the spacecraft’s August 2025 launch. It does not itself demonstrate a calibrated atmospheric retrieval.
Look closely
How would you establish that a new instrument continues an older measurement record?
See what to notice
Compare calibration, sampling, retrieval definitions and overlapping observations. A preparation photograph identifies hardware but cannot establish measurement continuity.

Continue a record without hiding the changes
ESA develops the spacecraft in partnership with EUMETSAT, which implements and operates the wider system; instrument partners contribute specialized capabilities. The transition from Metop to Metop-SG aims to improve observations while sustaining a long record. New spectral sampling and instrument responses mean old and new products cannot simply be assumed identical.
For a fictional humidity comparison across the transition, inspect calibration, retrieval definitions, spatial sampling and acquisition times. Use overlaps and independent observations to investigate offsets. Keep improvements in sensitivity separate from claims of real atmospheric change. The paired system’s value comes from combining complementary measurements and delivering documented products, with continuity demonstrated through comparison rather than inferred from a shared family name.
