Corrections improve a position solution
Galileo’s High Accuracy Service entered its initial phase on January 24, 2023. It supplies corrections for satellite orbits, clocks and biases through supported signals and an internet channel. A compatible receiver must process those corrections with an appropriate Precise Point Positioning algorithm; a correction message is not itself a finished position.
The service documentation distinguishes initial service from full-service objectives. In an original interpretation exercise, an advertised accuracy target cannot be applied to a device that lacks the required processing or operates outside the relevant conditions. Check the service phase, receiver support and measurement conditions before turning a specification into a universal promise.

Authentication answers a different question
Open Service Navigation Message Authentication Initial Service was declared on July 24, 2025. OSNMA lets a suitably implemented receiver verify the origin and integrity of Galileo navigation data. ESA’s February 2026 account documents tests distinguishing authentic messages from maliciously modified ones. This addresses trust in navigation data, rather than simply adding more decimal places to a coordinate.
An original analogy is checking the signature on a weather bulletin: it helps establish who issued the message and whether it was altered, but it does not remove fog outside the window. Likewise, data authentication should not be described as eliminating every propagation error, obstruction or interruption of signal reception. Accuracy, authenticity and availability are related but different properties.

Acknowledgement is not the whole rescue
Galileo also contributes to the international Cospas–Sarsat search-and-rescue system. Its return-link service became operational in January 2020. Compatible distress beacons can receive acknowledgement that the alert and location have been received by the search-and-rescue system. This feedback addresses uncertainty about message receipt.
Keep the stages of a rescue distinct in a teaching timeline: beacon activation, detection and location, acknowledgement, and the response itself. An acknowledgement is not evidence that a rescue team has already arrived or a guarantee of arrival time. This is another example of evaluating a service by the precise function it actually supplies.
