Lesson 3 of 4 · Follow cryogenic development and corrections
Follow cryogenic development and corrections
6 minute lesson · 3 checks along the way
Your goal for this lessonDistinguish attempts from successful demonstrations and trace an investigation from observations to corrective tests.
In this lesson 3 sections · 3 checks

Preserve the unsuccessful attempt in the history
GSLV-D3 carried the first Indian Cryogenic Upper Stage flight attempt on April 15, 2010; that test was unsuccessful. GSLV-D5 successfully flew the indigenous engine and stage on January 5, 2014. Calling 2014 the first attempt would erase an important part of the development record.
A July 2014 Department of Space account describes changes following failure reviews, including pump tolerances, inspection and structural or wiring arrangements. A development program learns through investigation, design changes and testing. A successful later demonstration is evidence for its flown configuration, not a statement that every earlier problem was imaginary.

Use a causal chain rather than a symptom label
GSLV-F10 failed in August 2021. ISRO’s March 2022 investigation account linked low liquid-hydrogen tank pressure to abnormal booster-pump operation and inadequate flow to the engine. It identified a leaking vent-and-relief valve as the likely pressure-loss mechanism. The account retained uncertainty about how the valve’s soft seal was damaged.
This is a chain of interacting conditions, not merely “the engine failed.” A warning near an engine can originate in the propellant supply or another connected subsystem. Engineers compare the time sequence and predictions from proposed mechanisms with the recorded behavior.

Test the correction under relevant conditions
The published F10 account describes simulations, ground tests and recommendations addressing pressurization, valve robustness and additional monitoring. A proposed fix should be checked under the temperature, pressure and timing conditions relevant to the mechanism. Changing several parts at once also requires tracking what changed and which evidence supports each change.
In an original test-planning exercise, a valve passes a warm leak check but shows a leak after a cold cycle under representative mounting loads. The second result is relevant even if the first test passed. Do not average the two into “half reliable”: investigate the condition-dependent behavior and verify the corrected assembly under the conditions it must endure.
