Continue an ocean-observing family
Oceansat is an Indian satellite family developed for ocean-related observations. Oceansat-2 launched in September 2009 to extend the services of Oceansat-1, also called IRS-P4. Its three payloads were an Ocean Colour Monitor, a Ku-band and the Italian Space Agency’s Sounder for Atmosphere, ROSA. The combination connected ocean and atmospheric questions without making the instruments equivalent.
A color instrument measures radiation in spectral bands. A scatterometer measures radar used to infer ocean-surface winds. Radio occultation uses changes in radio-signal propagation to investigate the atmosphere. Naming the actual observable helps prevent a displayed product from being mistaken for a direct photograph of the quantity a scientist ultimately wants.

Extend the measurements without erasing their limits
EOS-06, the third-generation Oceansat spacecraft, carries an Ocean Color Monitor, a Sea Surface Temperature Monitor, a Ku-band scatterometer and ARGOS. The mission’s objectives include continuity of ocean-color and wind information, additional measurements and improved data-processing methods. These are related capabilities that require their own calibration and retrieval algorithms.
Ocean color can support inferences about biological and other materials influencing the measured light. It is not a direct count of fish or a complete inventory of life below the surface. Likewise, a surface-temperature product concerns a particular measured layer and method; it is not a direct measurement of the temperature at every depth. Different products constrain different parts of the ocean system.

Read a mosaic as a constructed data product
In March 2023, ISRO published a global false-color mosaic made from EOS-06 observations acquired during February 1–15. It combined thousands of images into a one-kilometer product. The result is a processed composite across time, not one instantaneous photograph taken with a single camera exposure. Its color choices represent the selected measurements and processing.
For a fictional coastal bloom study, inspect observation dates, spectral information, cloud screening and supporting measurements before interpreting a colored patch. A composite may make regional patterns easier to see while combining observations from different days. Oceansat’s value lies in sustained, complementary measurements and traceable products; a striking picture becomes more useful when its measurement history is understood.
