Continue a long-term observing capability
Resourcesat-1, also known as IRS-P6, launched in October 2003 to continue and improve Indian remote-sensing data services. Its payload combined LISS-4, LISS-3 and the Advanced Wide Field Sensor, AWiFS. These instruments supplied different combinations of spatial detail, spectral information and coverage rather than three interchangeable views.
Resourcesat-2 launched on April 20, 2011, as a follow-on mission. Continuity means preserving a useful observing record while introducing changes that must be understood. It does not mean every value from two generations can be joined without calibration or documentation. A change in sensor response can resemble a change on Earth if the comparison ignores the instruments.

Choose the scale that fits the question
A broad- instrument can cover a large region efficiently, while finer-detail imaging can help examine smaller features. Resourcesat’s combination lets users connect regional patterns with more detailed observations. The correct choice depends on the study: a national seasonal assessment and a local land-use question may need different products or several complementary ones.
Resourcesat-2 widened the multispectral LISS-4 swath relative to Resourcesat-1 and changed data for its imaging instruments. More encoded brightness levels can represent smaller signal increments, but they do not automatically remove noise, atmospheric effects or calibration error. Spatial detail, spectral sampling and radiometric encoding describe different aspects of a measurement.
DOS/ISRO photographed Resourcesat-2 at the top of the Resourcesat-2, YouthSat and X-Sat payload stack during integration with PSLV-C16 before the April 2011 launch. The smaller spacecraft remain distinct payloads, not additional Resourcesat cameras. Resized and compressed from the official original.
Look closely
Why should the smaller payloads not be described as parts of the Resourcesat imaging instrument?
See what to notice
They are separate spacecraft sharing the launch. Physical proximity during integration does not establish a common instrument identity.

Keep optical measurements and other payloads distinct
Resourcesat-2 also carried an experimental Automatic Identification System payload supplied by COMDEV in Canada. AIS receives messages associated with equipped ships; it is a different measurement path from the optical cameras. Sharing one spacecraft does not make a radio message a direct image of every vessel, nor does it erase the contributing organization’s role.
For a fictional drought study, select observations from suitable dates, document cloud gaps and compare relevant ground information. Distinguish observed vegetation response from the inferred cause: rainfall, irrigation, crop type and land management can all matter. A continuous satellite record makes change studies possible, while analysis and validation determine whether a particular explanation is justified.
