Private operators and a growing satellite family
Pasifik Satelit Nusantara, or PSN, developed commercial satellite services alongside Indonesia’s other communications providers. Nusantara Satu launched in February 2019 and used high-throughput technology for broadband access. The name Nusantara identifies a family of projects, but the numbered spacecraft do not all share the same outcome. Nusantara Dua’s April 2020 launch suffered an anomaly and failed to achieve its intended orbit.
Nusantara Tiga is associated with the SATRIA public-service partnership discussed in the next lesson. Nusantara Lima is another, later broadband spacecraft. Keeping these identities separate prevents a successful launch from being assigned to the wrong vehicle or a failed mission from disappearing into a general family description. Operator, manufacturer, launch provider and public-service customer also describe different responsibilities.

More capacity does not mean the same rate everywhere
Boeing described Nusantara Lima’s payload as capable of more than 160 gigabits per second, with flexible allocation of communications capacity. High-throughput architectures can concentrate coverage into smaller beams and reuse suitable radio resources in separated areas. The resulting spacecraft total is an aggregate capability. A particular user’s rate still depends on local allocation, contention, terminals and the rest of the network.
For a fictional teaching example, allocate a 100 Mbps pool equally among ten simultaneously active terminals. Each receives 10 Mbps before overhead. If only two remain active and the system can redistribute the whole pool equally, each could receive 50 Mbps. These are simplified allocations, not Nusantara product speeds. The calculation shows why a shared total and an individual subscription promise cannot be treated as interchangeable numbers.

Robert Mason’s U.S. Space Force photograph documents liftoff; the spacecraft is enclosed, and its later orbit raising and operational milestones require separate records. The full published composition is retained, with resizing and recompression only.
Look closely
Which part of the mission does this photograph directly document?
See what to notice
The visible event is the rocket’s departure from the pad. It does not show the spacecraft’s eventual orbit or a working customer connection.
This long-exposure SpaceX photograph records the February 2019 launch carrying Nusantara Satu. The luminous curve combines motion over an exposure; it is not the spacecraft’s complete orbit, and it is a different launch from Nusantara Lima’s. The complete source composition is retained, with resizing and recompression only.
Look closely
Does the curved trail map the spacecraft’s complete orbit around Earth?
See what to notice
No. It records a bright moving launch source from one viewpoint during an exposure. Reconstructing the trajectory requires timing, geometry and tracking data.

Electric orbit raising takes time
PSN’s dated updates document Nusantara Lima’s launch in September 2025 and arrival in on January 29, 2026, after . On May 13, 2026, the operator announced that the satellite had entered its operational stage and was ready for commercialization. Electric propulsion can apply a small thrust over a long period, changing the orbit gradually. A launch photograph captures the departure event; it cannot show that months of later maneuvers and checks have already succeeded.
Read a mission timeline as a sequence of evidence. Delivery establishes that a spacecraft reached the launch campaign; launch establishes departure; orbit arrival establishes another milestone. Customer service requires further evidence about commissioning and the operating network. Nusantara’s mixture of successful launches, a failed mission and a prolonged orbit-raising phase offers a useful alternative to a simple list of satellite names: each outcome has a cause, a date and consequences for the people awaiting connectivity.
