Lesson 3 of 4 · Match image detail to the measurement
Match image detail to the measurement
6 minute lesson · 3 checks along the way
Your goal for this lessonCompare panchromatic and multispectral information and explain why a sharper display does not create independent spectral observations.

Two kinds of detail serve different tasks
CNSA specifies 2-metre panchromatic and 8-metre multispectral resolution for the 2023 satellite. Panchromatic imagery combines a broad spectral range into a brightness measurement; multispectral imagery separates measurements into bands. Finer spatial detail and richer spectral information are different properties. The mission announcement does not provide a complete band-response or image-quality validation dataset.
A planner tracing the shape of a large road may value spatial detail. An analyst distinguishing vegetation conditions may need calibrated spectral information and suitable reference observations. Neither task is solved by choosing the smallest advertised number without considering what the sensor measures and how the product was processed.

Compare equal ground areas
Use an idealized square grid to understand the stated spacing: an eight-metre side contains four two-metre cells. Over an eight-by-eight-metre square, that makes sixteen two-by-two cells, rather than four. This is a geometric comparison, not a claim that every cell resolves a separate real-world object. Optical response, contrast and processing also affect discernible detail.
A fictional sixteen-by-sixteen-metre patch contains sixty-four two-metre grid cells or four eight-metre cells. The ratio is still sixteen. More spatial samples can describe shape more finely, but they do not turn the panchromatic measurement into sixteen separately measured spectra inside one coarser multispectral cell.
A four-to-one side ratio gives sixteen cells

Use a fused image with its method attached
Pansharpening combines fine panchromatic structure with coarser multispectral information. NASA explains this through Landsat; that explanation is general context, not evidence that a particular MisrSat algorithm was used. A fused display can be useful for interpretation while its finer colour values remain processing estimates.
For a fictional crop study, compare the fused product with appropriate reference data before relying on small colour differences. Retain the original bands, acquisition times and processing method. A visually crisp field boundary is useful evidence about appearance, but does not independently establish the crop type, water stress or accuracy of every fine-grid spectral value.
