First test the connection
The uncrewed Shenzhou 8 docked with Tiangong 1 in 2011. Shenzhou 9 carried Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and Liu Yang to the laboratory in 2012 and tested both automatic and manual docking. These missions added evidence about relative navigation, physical connection and operating the joined vehicles.

Approach is not attachment
A docking vehicle has to control relative position, alignment and closing speed. Being near the target does not establish that the latches have engaged or that the pressure boundary is sound. In a fictional docking exercise, a green navigation display alongside an unresolved seal check is a reason to continue verification, not to open the hatch.

Crew access broadens the test
Liu Yang became the first Chinese woman in space on Shenzhou 9. The crew’s visit also tested living and working aboard the joined laboratory and transport. A flight milestone and participation milestone belong in the same history, but they answer different questions: what became technically possible, and who gained access to do it?
